Law of the Sea is the aspect of public international law concerned with public order in world's oceans. Merchant Shipping Law is the private aspect of law concerned with commercial aspect of shipping. The two (public/private) most times overlap.
Merchant Shipping Law regulates the ownership, registration, licensing, finance/acquisition, chartering, insurance, mortgage, repairs, salvage, towage, pilotage, inspection, surveys, of ships. It also covers cabotage, labour/employment of seamen, supply of necessaries, etc.
Law of the Sea is a body of laws, regulations, treaties, protocols regulating the rights & obligations of States regarding maritime activities. Uses of the oceans, exploitation of marine resources, maritime boundaries, marine pollution, safety, etc are purviews of Law of the Sea.
Maritime Law is primarily divided into two parts: (1) Law of the Sea; (2) Merchant Shipping.
Marine insurance is the oldest type of insurance. Out of it grew non-marine insurance and reinsurance.
