On Friday evening my pamphlet 'Like Nesting Dolls We Are' was launched. Its all about ancestry, memory, migration and longing. Available to buy at seahorsepublications.com #WritingCommunity #poetry
This isn't very eloquently written. I'm in a bit of a fit of rage, and angry tears after talking to one of my husband's friends. My husband and I got in the car, and I just went off. I can't understand the mindset of a republican man. I think my husband may have thought I was…
Heading out to a reading that is within walking distance tonight. Joy!
In Trump's heart there is no curiosity, no wonder, no kindness, no compassion, no lightness of spirit; only ego, rage, resentment, impulsiveness and cruelty. You are better than him. He does not deserve your vote.
They say climate *protesters* are disruptive. Valencia today.
Yesterday in Quito, Ecuador, five of us filed a legal petition. Four of us were human, one was a cloud-forest. The petition concerns a song, 'Song of the Cedars', which we humans wrote in & with the Los Cedros cloud-forest 2 yrs ago. Here's the song (🎧): found.ee/songofthecedars…
I remember a time when one income could buy a house, support a family. When you knew your GP and ambulances arrived within minutes, we all had dentists, and we had clean beaches to visit. Now we have food banks and warm banks, a housing crisis and people living pay cheque to pay…
If Lucy Connolly was Black or Brown the fans twerking for her and sobbing she's a 'political prisoner' wouldn't give a single shit. Instead they'd be demanding she's deported after serving her prison sentence. She wanted asylum seekers burnt to death - I'm glad she's in prison 🙌🏾
Halnaker tree tunnel in Sussex is a hollow way, or just Holloway Created by 2,000 years of traffic on the original Roman Road from London to Chichester Stane Street is the modern name of the road from Londinium (London) to Noviomagus Reginorum (Chichester)
i read Dracula by Bram Stoker recently and it's so much weirder than i thought! theres multiple chapters about how cool stenography is. lots of train schedules. a lot of (inaccurate) excitement about blood transfusions. a much better horror novel in the middle about a doomed ship
#OnThisDay, 11th October 1982, the Mary Rose was raised from the Solent in one of the largest maritime archaeological projects the world has ever know. The event was seen by 50 million people worldwide - do you remember watching it? #WhereWereYouIn82
Glaciers are strange, tenacious archivists. Breaking: 100 yrs on from his disappearance nr the summit of Everest with George Mallory, Sandy Irvine's remains have been found. A hobnail boot melting out of the ice. A name tag sewn into a sock. Astonishing. nationalgeographic.com/adventure/arti…
Bank holiday Monday. Pint and writing session in my local pub on my own away from household distractions. #Bankholiday #WritingCommmunity
It's hard to believe that this oak leaf, found on the wreck of the Mary Rose, fell from a tree during the reign of Henry VIII. Wonder if the tree it fell from ended up on a ship too? Didn't find any acorns though. Shame.
I've just finished watching #Nightsleeper and now have the fear about taking the train from Glasgow Central to Yorkshire in a few weeks, especially as we cross Ribblehead Viaduct enroute.
RIP the great artist Norman Ackroyd (1938-16.09.24): etcher-magician who conjured weather & light from metal & acid; his work constitutes one of the great visual records of this archipelago’s edges. We travelled together—& I made this programme with him: bbc.co.uk/programmes/m00…
Just finished News Of The Dead by James Robertson. This page about our post covid world with war and conflict, the displacement, cruelty and violence directed at the most vulnerable people across the world absolutely nails it.
Raging cold so not going to make @saintmirrenfc v Kilmarnock game today. Staying home and watching it on telly and keeping an eye on the @officialbantams game as well. C'mon The Buddies and The Bantams! 🐼🐓⚽️
Trauma doesn't make people stronger. It damages their nervous system. It hijacks their digestive track. It keeps the person in a constant loop of hypervigilance. To tell someone they are stronger because of trauma is to deny what it has cost them to survive.
A *fabulous* resource: the Coilltean Caillte/Forgotten Woodlands project has mapped 15,000 Scottish place-names indicating presence of trees/forest in the land. Gaelic as ecological memory-trove. Map, pronunciation guide, stories etc. here: storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/9b790d… 👏@ainmeanaite
