We don’t pass the torch, we pass the thread--Ariadne’s thread to lead us out of the maze of healthcare complexity. Funny moment when @Atul_Gawande passed the thread to @Asaf_Bitton, our new executive director, this week

A former medical director at Aetna admitted to never reviewing patient records or even having basic knowledge of their clinical conditions before refusing requests for treatment. This is what patients and healthcare workers have to deal with in this country.
Importance of Increasing Surgeon Participation in Hospital Leadership in @JAMASurgery. If we look for surgeons serving in executive roles beyond just CEO, the pool has expanded considerably in recent years, but certainly should be many more! jamanetwork.com/journals/jamas…

Why #SaferSurgery strategies are so important: New data show that 4.2M people worldwide die in or after surgery each year, >50% in low & middle income countries and most preventable. That's more than HIV, TB, malaria combined. @safersurgery @TheLancet thelancet.com/journals/lance…

While there should absolutely be significant resources dedicated to fighting the opioid crisis in the present, we also need to prepare for the wave of downstream effects from this epidemic. This will echo for decades.
.@ml_barnett told @usnews that the opioid crisis could have long-term implications for small communities: “The workforce that would be fathers, parents, taxpayers—the backbone of those communities 10 or 20 years from now—a staggering proportion are dying." harvardhealth.me/acces23a47
This is a big deal. 1. Hospitals have cut harm by 13% since 2014. 2. We have the measures to know it and the methods to reduce harms thanks to @AHRQNews (Remember this when the govt tries to put the agency on the chopping block again.) axios.com/newsletters/ax…

The old adage "walking a mile in another's shoes" comes to mind in the moving thread. Perspective shifts can be powerful learning tools, and in health care can make all the difference.
THREAD I’ve been fortunate (so far) to have never been seriously ill or injured, and have never really had to experience being a patient. For the past week, however, I’ve had the exhausting experience of being an ICU parent. It’s given me some practice-changing perspective. 1/
