Love the show, but accuracy isn't its strongsuit: If a wind turbine doesn't offset the carbon required to make it, how can it be economically competitive?

I am glad to see Hollywood get it right with this. I've only seen clips of this show (Landman with Bill Bob Thornton) but it seems like a good show. From the same people that brought you Yellowstone.

Few people know this: half of the world's energy use is for heat used in buildings and industry. And almost all of it is from burning fossil fuels. That's why we need to decarbonise heat if we want to stand a chance of meeting our climate targets.

Electrification of space heating in New England causes the variability in peak electricity demand in 2050 to be larger than the total system peak today. That could be tough to manage.

In ships, diesel engines have a respectable efficiency (35%+). Assuming fuel cells are about 45% efficient... That means the price of delivered hydrogen needs to be around $4.25/kg H2 (or a $1.25 premium vs diesel) in order to have a cost of mitigation <$100/t CO2. Reasonable?

Nice ... 🙏 ... I'll add that the 2nd law suggests high temp reactors are better. Let's measure twice and cut once.

It's a frequent refrain – why are "we" investing in the development of so many different SMRs and advanced reactors. Why not just standardize on something like the AP1000 which is already licensed and operating in modest numbers in the US and China? This notion was recently…

Here's another type of infrastructure we need to build: CO2 pipelines We've been stuck at ~5,000 miles of pipelines for a decade. If you want carbon dioxide removal and carbon capture to work, then we need to build some pipelines.

👇+investment in my favorite nuclear tech (Pebble bed reactor) has me excited for nuclear. DYK, the TSIRO pebbles can use Haleu (20% enriched) fuel as well as molten salt for coolant, making the PBR much smaller?

Can you feel the vibe shift yet? All within the last month.

Imagine telling people five years ago that data centers would spark a nuclear renessaince.

I'm a bit surprised that tech companies are willing to lock in $100/MWh+ prices for nuclear given what's happened to solar+wind+battery+natural gas prices, and wholesale prices in general across the grid. They must be banking on it being the only way to get power, and/or the AI…

Perfect getting in the way of the good again with this letter, IMHO. Exported fossil fuels will not necessarily increase consumption elsewhere it will likely offset other sources. Nothing is perfect, but things sure will slow in the US w/o #transmission & #permitting improvements…

These estimates have been accessible for a decade more or less. One wonders what has inspired the green hydrogen hype 🤔

I’ve had about 100 people send me the paper on green hydrogen This figure is pretty striking and I think fully elucidates how non-linear the pathway to low emissions will be But this finding is going to ruffle a lot of feathers either way doi.org/10.1016/j.joul…

Pretty amazing net zero meta study ... by 2050, electricity between 1/3 to 2/3rds of economy. Fossil fuels between 1/5 to 2/3rds of economy. Basically, "electrify everything" and "divestment" aren't really reflective of the published literature.

What can decarbonization scenarios tell us about energy system transitions? Our new article in @Joule_CP summarizes the uses and limits of ensembles using a new public database of US net-zero scenarios! A 🧵 on key findings…

Build a huge, transcontinental CO2 pipeline system ... and while we're at it, build parallel O2 and syngas pipelines alongside it.

Check in on your hydrogen friends. They're probably looking for a new role.

This cancellation is regrettable imo. We could trust the Norwegians to enforce strict environmental standards around fossil hydrogen with CCS. Instead, we're probably going to see more unabated gas use for longer. hydrogeninsight.com/production/gre…
