Wetlands are the most threatened ecosystem on the planet. When drained/destroyed, accumulated organic matter begins to decompose, producing methane. Wetland destruction releases stored carbon & methane. There has been a 35% loss of wetlands since 1970.

The bad news is that the methane spike of 2020-2022 was *not* due to anthropogenic fossil fuel methane and *not* due to a decrease in the hydroxyl radical sink, like I theorized. The spike *was* due to microbial sources, most likely natural sources. deccanherald.com/science/the-gl…

Farming a single Atlantic salmon can require killing and processing over 1,000 wild school fish like anchovies — critical prey for sea lions, sea birds, penguins, and whales. Cool to see journalists visualize their own interpretations of our data:

Fish farming is supposed to give overexploited oceans a break. But a new study finds that it may be taking way more fish out of oceans to feed farmed fish than previously thought. New story of mine up on Vox today, replete with new charts: vox.com/future-perfect…

i know this only matters to like 7 people on the planet, but i’m one of them i guess. bear number 399 was struck by a large truck while crossing the road, and died last night she was was 28 & had at least 18 cubs, 8 of whom survived to adulthood. wish it didn’t end like this

A gentle reminder that there are GIANT CRAB PARTIES GOING ON IN THE DEEP SEA!!!????!

We're back at the San Antonio Canyon today with @SchmidtOcean! Yesterday, we came across a crazy conflagration of crabs 400 meters down. Migration route? Mating season? (It's at the ~2 hr mark here --> youtube.com/watch?v=FgVBJN…)
