Each August, we take time to shine a light on the political prisoners who have been targeted by the state for their work in furthering our movement for Black liberation. It’s a heavy topic as we reflect on the pain, trauma, and loss inflicted on our people. (1/5)

I’m not joking when I say that this is the kind of shit they have audacity to think can/should be funded when they say “community policing”.

I'm down for an in person conversation to. Its not black & white and its not just one option or answer. Even when talking about rape & murder there are so many factors to consider and talk about. I appreciate all the work you do and hope that you would be down to meet in person.

Some of those tangible steps are already in the books with LA County thanks to the work of @JusticeLANow and others. I hope folks read the ATI report and recommendations, but the county needs to be pressed to implement it wholly and not in accordance with their own bad faith

Ask ten people what is abolition and you may get ten different answers, so it is an important conversation to treat with respect and rigor. But for me, abolition does not mean an absence of removal

James Nelson Reposted

It’s the absence of punitive systems of state violence that aren’t oriented towards public safety, but rather the exploitation of grief and trauma and general lack of health infrastructure.

James Nelson Reposted

And if we talk about it, the convo doesn’t start at thinking about it in response to violence or harm. It is a holistic conversation about health infrastructure, neighborhood peace work, grief support, housing and food, and general opportunities

James Nelson Reposted

And to talk about what it means when someone can’t be around the community or their partner outside of a system that then fractures the family or communities ability to sustain. The system, as mediated by judges and police and prosecutors has not kept anyone safe
