A bit of a fantasy, imagining my Compton family are related to the Comptons of Northampton (so bending my rules a bit on inclusion into the world of #dukesandprinces). A great rise from a Tudor favourite to one of the UK's richest peers dukesandprinces.org/2024/11/20/com…

My recurring appeal to @netflix @HBO @PrimeVideo to greenlight a series on one of the most powerful, richest, extravagant and bonkers dynasty in 15th c Europe: the Burgundians who ran an 'empire' that was the envy of many kings and emperors. Retweet if you agree ! Spread the word

Here's my latest in a series of British queen-consorts who come from families of #dukesandprinces: Brunswick and the queen that never was, Sophia Dorothea. Plus a virtual visit to castles all over Hanover, from Celle to Herrenhausen. dukesandprinces.org/2024/10/22/duk…

I had a blast last week talking #heraldry to BA and MA students from the University of Luxembourg at the @bnluxembourg

The #Dukesandprinces of Jülich lived in a massive castle within a massive fortress. But not for long. They died out 1609. This is now a school

In travels of #dukesandprinces, I see Salmchateau and the river Salm, origin spot for the princely house of Salm in the Belgian Ardennes.

This evening a very interesting talk at the University of Luxembourg by Prof Martin Holý of the @HiuAV2017 on the childhood of #Habsburg princes in Early Modern #Bohemia.

Are the MacDonalds qualified to join the ranks of the dukes and princes? Was Somerled, King of the Isles a #Viking or a Scot? Does the new Australian-born Queen of Denmark #MaryDonaldson have Norse blood? Are there lots and lots of ruined castles on #Skye? dukesandprinces.org/2024/09/24/the…

So...this happened. I guess I should have publicised it before it happened, not after... Met two other very interesting panelists! independent.co.uk/life-style/roy…

After a lovely week in Czechia, a blog post about the Kinsky Princes! One of the richest and most loyal families of the Habsburgs, with castles all over Bohemia, and huge palaces in Prague and Vienna. Patrons of Beethoven and their own breed of horses. dukesandprinces.org/2024/09/06/kin…

Fancy a trip to Manchester next autumn? Come present your work on conflict and resolution in history. And it doesn't just have to be about Catherine de Medici and the Guise (as below) ... but it might be fun!

Congratulations! What an achievement!

William III is the cover boy of September’s @HistoryToday 🤩 Can’t believe my article made the cover! To find out more about William’s (alleged) same-sex affairs and the influence this had on public views of sexuality, take a read! #gay #history

In today's #dukesandprinces, we see the bishop's palace in Olomouc, Moravia, where Prince Charles Joseph of Lorraine, younger brother of Duke Léopold, and nephew of Emperor Leopold, had his official residence. He also spent a lot of time in Vienna and Nancy.
