Almost every single state that banned trans people from playing sports went on to ban healthcare for trans youth. This issue is a trojan horse meant to codify the otherness of trans people into state law.

There is a push among some orgs, "moderate" legislators, and even trans people to "give up the sports issue" in hopes that will stop hate. I have watched moderates try this in 23 state houses. It doesn't work. There's no amount of give you can offer that stops them from taking.

I honestly believe decline in literacy standards is the most worrying trend we’re seeing in the west. I don’t think people have grasped how serious this is. It affects everything. And once literacy is sufficiently degraded, ppl can no longer understand why it’s a problem.

The latest US literacy stats have just dropped and they are every bit as grim as you might imagine. "Approximately 50% of Americans read so poorly that they are unable to perform simple tasks such as reading prescription drug labels"

A literate population is a basic requirement for a modern society to function: this is even more basic that dealing with misinformation, it’s essential to interact with basic services, understand safety instructions, apply for benefits, read recipes.

A humanoid body would actually be orders of magnitude less effective than a combine harvester with the operating system of a scaled-up roomba.

This could become reality one day.

Publishers! Have you signed a contract with a clause promising never to feed authors’ work to LLM training? Is that clause worded so as to leave you liable even in the event you don’t do so deliberately or for payment? If so you need to pay attention to this!

If you use Microsoft Word, read this!

I'm so glad our finite sources of drinking water are being evaporated so people who have less creativity than a middle schooler can pretend to make stuff that looks like utter dogshit

Correct. Moral defects such as Trumpism are quite naturally weeded out of the gene pool.

My brother in law 6’2 Fireman Home owner 5% body fat 2024 first time voter went on a date last night with some crunchy granola hippie. She asked if he had voted and for whom and when he said Trump she called an Uber and left 💀 Natural selection at play.

Great, do Narnia next.

It's the 59th anniversary of Rhodesia's Independence from the British who were demanding their self-destruction in the name of mass democracy But why did Rhodesia declare independence on the 11th of November, 1965? Few actually seem to know, so it's time to explain in the 🧵👇

It also takes a while before an author gets any income. The book has to earn back the advance paid to the author by the publisher before the author gets anything. It was 40 yrs before I saw royalties from any of my books. (I’m not exaggerating)

How much do authors earn from each book sale...?

A few pints in the other night, I forgot my words when I was trying to say "pet project," "wheelhouse," or something else to describe another researcher's specific area. What I said was, "Of course I'm interested, but it's [guy's name]'s thing; that's his pink pony."

“When I use a word,” Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, “it means just what I choose it to mean—neither more nor less.” “The question is,” said Alice, “whether you can make words mean so many different things.”

If you were a big reader as a kid, you were disassociating.
