We are still here, and we are Indigenous @NBCUniversal! In celebration of Native American Heritage Month, we are proud to share some of the faces, voices, traditions and languages at the heart of this growing community: vimeo.com/648004214 #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth
Today, @ProPublica is launching The Repatriation Project. Our first pieces look at the U.S. institutions/agencies that hold hundreds–in some cases thousands–of ancestral remains & belongings from Indigenous gravesites propublica.org/article/repatr…
This university system is covering tuition and fees for Native American students, but could it ever make up for building these institutions on unceded Indigenous land? Watch my latest reporting for @NBCNewsNow! nbcnews.com/now/video/tuit…
The creator of the Netflix hit show “Sprit Rangers,” Karissa Valencia (Chumash/Mexican), shares with us how she made sure the show wasn’t “about us without us” but, rather, Indigenized from the very beginning. #SpiritRangerz #NativePride cc @netflixfamily
Universal Pictures Director of Development Tony Ducret joined us for our “Real to Reel” event to share what his awesome job is about and how @UniversalPics is seeking to widen reach to the next generation of BIPOC Hollywood leaders 🤩 #HereYouCan cc: @workatNBCU
Watch @kellylynnedang with the 🎤 drop on @netflixfamily’s #SpiritRangers: “Even though this is for… a young, young audience, there are a lot of people watching this at home, maybe parents or others who have a preschool level understanding of Indigenous people…”
How did the creator of “Spirit Rangers,” Karissa Valencia, adapt her traditional Chumash stories for Native and non-Native audiences on @netflix? And what’s her favorite episode? We got to ask her at our event “Real to Reel: BIPOC Media Representation.” Watch! #SpiritRangers
We had the honor of hosting the 23rd Poet Laureate of the United States, Joy Harjo (Muscogee (Creek) Nation) for a poetry reading and interview. She dropped a lot of knowledge bombs, like the one in this clip: #NativeAmericanPride
Meet Chef Crystal Wahpepah @Chef_Wahpepah (Kickapoo): Indigenous food warrior whose delicious food is seasonal, sustainable, & Native American grown! Her restaurant “Wahpepah’s Kitchen” in Oakland, CA “represents sovereignty, it represents ‘land back,’ it represents reclaiming.”
On #SundayTODAY, @NialaCharles takes us to Wahpepah's Kitchen in Oakland, the popular restaurant where @Chef_Wahpepah serves indigenous food and Native American tradition. #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth today.com/video/native-a…
For #NativeAmericanHeritageDay, we traveled to the Santa Fe Indian School to tell a story of Indigenous resilience. Once part of the US government’s violent system of boarding schools, the school is now controlled by the 19 Pueblo tribes. nbcnews.com/now/video/sant…
All around campus grow corn stalks like this one. Student Alexis Vigil (Pueblo of Jemez) told us that each one represents a Native kid who suffered or died here and was “never able to return home.” Alexis told @ahylton26: “Each corn that grows is a kid that is flourishing.”
Santa Fe Indian School has taken back their school and their curriculum. Once a boarding school that traumatized Native children, it’s now a school that celebrates Indigenous culture, language, and traditions. I hope you’ll watch their story on @MSNBC msnbc.com/hallie-jackson…
Today’s @IndigenousNBCU Media Spotlight: Robert Guillen, NBCU @Dreamworks Technology Asset Management Coordinator! "Follow your dreams and never stop striving to reach higher. Indigenous people can also break the glass ceiling. I quote @CASottile: 'Let's Indigenize!'"
Today’s @IndigenousNBCU Media Spotlight: @CASottile, @NBCNews Producer! "I think we make our ancestors proud when we tell our own stories. As journalists, we can make a difference by reporting the authentic representation of our people and our culture." @najournalists (THREAD)
We are joined by a national treasure today for a hybrid event featuring 23rd U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo (Muscogee Creek Nation). Hearing her poetry and conversation with @grahambrewer (Cherokee Nation) is such a cool way to celebrate #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth 🔥
Hire Indigenous journalists. Hire Indigenous producers. Hire Indigenous copy editors. Hire Indigenous sports broadcasters. What else can newsrooms do to improve coverage of Indigenous communities? nbcuacademy.com/catalog/indige… @najournalists @indigenousnbcu
To our members, hope you caught today’s event with @WesleyStudi! (And if not, we’ll share the recording with you.) #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth
Pinching myself that I got to interview @WesleyStudi about his upbringing, acting, and activism. We discussed how reversal of the Indian Child Welfare Act would be “devastating” to Native sovereignty and how allies should support Native folks politically.
This article is a great example on how the @nytimes coverage of Indigenous issues doesn’t meet the basic standards of journalism. This article grossly misrepresents what happened in the underlying custody cases and the people behind the lawsuit.
In a case that could affect thousands of Native American children, the Supreme Court will begin hearing arguments Wednesday in the case of a four-year-old girl, whose birth mother is Navajo but who is living with a white family who wants to adopt her. nyti.ms/3WKaB3B
On Wed #SCOTUS will hear oral arguments in a case that could be the beginning of the end of the legal structure defending Native rights in this country. If you’re not paying attention yet, tune in. #Brackeen #ICWA motherjones.com/politics/2022/…
Why do we celebrate Native American Heritage in November? @alyssaklondon, @NBCNews & @MSNBC contributor, and @CASottile, @NBCNews reporter and producer, highlight recent and historic firsts in Indigenous communities: nbcuacademy.com/catalog/indige… @IndigenousNBCU @najournalists
