When plotting phylogenetic trees with #ggtree (one of my absolute favourite #Rstats packages!) I often see people manually identifying nodes to highlight clades Here's a quick blog post on how I automate it #dataviz rowena-h.github.io/bioinformatics…
Clustering algorithms report clusters even when none exist. In single-cell RNA-Seq pipelines, novel cell types are often identified by clustering algorithms. Expanding on Kimes et al.'s work, we introduce significance analysis for single-cell RNA-Seq data: nature.com/articles/s4159…
If you make all the panels in R, you can actually make the entire figure in R with the patchwork package (github.com/thomasp85/patc…).
I was inspired by the big genomics at #Evol2023 to make a tool to help bioinformaticians explore huge data. This tool is fast, computationally light and requires no true installation steps. It takes fastq.gz inputs and estimates a genetic distance matrix. github.com/avanwallendael…
Despite public perceptions that AsianAms oppose affirmative action, @AAPIData found 70% of AsianAms FAVOR affirmative action. But 1 group stands apart in opposition: Chinese Americans. Here are some thoughts as a Chinese American in academia (thread):
Tomorrow Texas will be the first state to ban book ban bans 😁 This joke is infinity... But seriously, when I moved to the US, I never even imagined hearing about book bans in the US. So authoritarian!
ICYMI: @audubonsociety, w/CEO @DrElizabethGray at the helm, has been making headlines a lot this year. Reasons include: an inability to treat talented & dedicated staff with respect, leading to the loss of yet another head of equity, diversity & inclusion eenews.net/articles/turmo…
Preliminary research findings presented at an @American_Heart conference in Boston found that "[i]nterpersonal racism experienced through employment, housing and interactions with police may increase the risk for heart disease in Black women." heart.org/en/news/2023/0…
Dr.MariaElena Zavala's talk at #MGM2023 was amazing. Dr. Zavala talked about research, mentors & work to increase the number of historically excluded folks in the academy. The Q&A session however had VERY disparaging comments about Indigenous peoples and I want to tell you why 🧵
It was such a great pleasure to collaborate on this paper. Feral plants are very interesting and deserve more attention. Thank you Makenzie and Alex for leading this work.
Super excited to share this manuscript on the exciting opportunities for research on feralization! This article, which started as a virtual colloquium at #BOTANY2021, aims to build international collaborations to describe, research, and utilize feral crops. 1/2

I can’t do this anymore. I was told I could join those labs from the PIs themselves. This is outrageous. Instead of the university coming to with a better pay system, I am now being told I’m not hired when the PIs said in November I could join their labs
Dear professors, if you have Peruvian students, check in with them. It's been more than 50 days of government oppression and deaths keep increasing. We are not doing okay, our families and friends are in danger and our country is falling apart.
“Mom, Mom, Mom.” A plea for life carved into the deathly history of racism like “I can’t breathe.” #TyreNichols
On Jan. 17, 1893, 130 years ago, the Native government of the Kingdom of Hawaii was overthrown by European and American settler colonialists. How did it happen, and how did this lead to the US annexation of Hawaii? A thread. 🧵 1/
94. Today is your 94th birthday. Everything you could have said about the human condition & how to improve it, you said. With courageous action. Will we see in 2023 that honoring you = more than statues & quotes? End racism (all inhumane isms) Eradicate poverty End militarism
