Professor James Thaele (1888-1948) was a prominent leader of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNISA), ICU as well as the Cape ANC. A close ally of Marcus Garvey. He went to the USA and completed two degrees at the Lincoln University. He returned to SA in 1921.

The execution of Mampuru II on the 22nd of November 1883 at the Pretoria Central prison. He was stripped naked and hanged in public. The rope broke the first time and he was dragged back onto the gallows to be hanged again.

Chief Nyabela (1825/30 - 1902) of the Ndzundza Ndebele was serving a life sentence for harbouring Mampuru II and refusing to release him to the Boers. This refusal led to a war between the Ndebele's and the Boers which lasted 9 months.

Ruth First (1925-1982) was a South African scholar and anti-apartheid activist. She was assassinated by a parcel bomb built by the South African police, in Mozambique where she was working as a University lecturer and for the anti-apartheid movement.

Harold Cressy (1889-1916) was a South African educationist and activist. He was the first 'coloured' to graduate from a South African University. He married Caroline Hartog with whom he had a daughter. He died in Kimberly from Pneumonia aged 27 in 1916.
