I remember my dad not going in a museum in DC when I was a kid because the metal detector picked up his knife and they wouldn’t let him in with it. Nowadays though they either don’t pick up or don’t care about the multi tool on my keychain.
When I was a kid, every adult male I knew carried a knife with them at all times. AFAICT this cultural habit was broken entirely by the TSA. It seems like a small and rare thing to have your knife taken, or have to remember not to carry it, but it seems like it was enough.
