This afternoon’s plenary on government-academic partnerships has the best line yet from @NAWRSWorkshop #NAWRS2023: “government agencies are not particularly known for being fast, but they’re still faster than publishing in academia.”
Do you thrive on collaborating with others working to connect research to practice? Are you working to build the evidence base in human services? Or are you applying evidence to the design of human services delivery? If so, register now: cvent.me/40mqxw
One chart that shows in perfect clarity the effect of policy on poverty. SPM includes non-cash and post-tax gov transfers -- SNAP, Medicaid/CHIP, EITC, CTC -- that the official poverty measure leaves out. Poverty is a policy choice.
holy moly, child poverty rate rose from all-time low of 5.2% in 2021 to 12.4% (!!!) in 2022, reflecting end of temporary child allowance and other programs.
“Real-world settings are contextually diverse, & the most relevant scientific questions must position answers to make sense within these contexts…rather than apart from them.” We have to *plan* to capture variations in barriers & facilitators so we understand why they vary.

"[T]he kind of research use most people think of, wherein a piece of research helps someone solve a problem...is likely infrequent because problems are rarely simple & the available evidence rarely is a perfect match to the problem." ❤️this breakdown of other evidence use types!
Excited about the next blog in the evidence use series -- what if we broaden our lens on what it means to use evidence in the government? acf.hhs.gov/opre/blog/2023…
Yes, and—this holds outside of academia as well, independent IRBs and IRBs within research institutions/firms can vary so widely it is 🤯
Fascinating slide deck on IRBs. It notes something that is widely known but rarely discussed in academia: IRBs at different institutions vary widely in how difficult they are to deal with but **these differences have nothing to do with actual research ethics**
"Ultimately policymaking has to be responsive to political constituencies. That’s natural. That’s how politics works, and that’s how policymaking works. But I do think that if we make a strong case, evidence-based policy can ideally become a constituency itself." 🤞🤞🤞
How can we ensure good intentions match actual impact in policy? 🤔 Justin Milner (@jhmilner), Arnold Ventures' new EVP of Evidence and Evaluation, shares his insights in a Q&A with our Director of Communications @evan7257 Read the interview here: arnoldventures.org/stories/arnold…
This tool makes a (credited!) cameo in every #ImpSci presentation I give, because nothing makes abstract concepts concrete like capitalizing THE THING 🤩🤓
Implementation science can be overwhelming, with numerous theories, frameworks, and strategies to consider. But what is implementation science really trying to do? In this paper, Geoff Curran shares a simple teaching tool that he has developed. #ImpSci
What a delight to have @LJDamschroder join @ellenchilds & me & our whole @abtassociates implementation research group today! Laura, we had such a blast talking with you about customizing the CFIR 2.0 for our work!
