The 8% was provided by the federal gov’t. @LegalAidAlberta has a shortage of duty counsel. Private lawyers are not taking LAA certs. The court system is bogged down worse than ever. 100% of Albertans do NOT have access to Justice. @shandro must stop misrepresenting the situation.
Today, in Question Period I asked about job action by legal aid roster lawyers over inadequate @LegalAidAlberta funding, legal aid Tariffs and eligibility criteria, and its impact on courts and access to justice. Here’s the response from Minister @shandro #ableg

Court of Appeal Justice Ritu Khullar is the Chief Justice of Alberta. Chief Justice Khullar, who was appointed to the Court of King's Bench in 2017 and elevated to the Court of Appeal in 2018, replaces retired Chief Justice Catherine Fraser. Congratulations! #ABKB #albertacourts
"Having to choose between justice or having food and a roof over your family’s head is wrong." If you agree, retweet and tag @shandro to demand immediate action to offer access to justice for ALL Albertans. #ableg bit.ly/3UT46Kf
What happens when legal aid is underfunded? Victims often experience greater stress, prolonged trauma & injustice while criminal cases are delayed. Read more on the serious issues @shandro's failure to act is causing on Alberta's justice system #ableg bit.ly/3UT46Kf
Inaction from the Alberta Government continues to cause backlogs and delays. This week, more cases are delayed yet the GOA claims no instances of family or criminal services are being affected due to insufficient funding. But they are @shandro@RachelNotley @ABDanielleSmith #ableg
You know that @YourAlberta gov't has created serious problems with @LegalAidAlberta and #accesstojustice when they've managed to get the family lawyers to join up together to fight back.😬 @shandro @ABDanielleSmith - It's time to resolve these issues. #lawyersforlegalaid

#DYK, more than 3,000 cases in provincial court are at risk of being tossed? Of that, there are 1,281 cases that are "serious and violent" charges. Email Minister of Justice, @shandro at Calgary.Acadia@assembly.ab.ca to ask how he's ensuring justice for ALL Albertans! #ABleg
Alberta Advantage? With the new pay increase, we rank 4th out of 10 provinces (up from 6) for our legal aid rates paid to junior lawyers. Don't ask about the pay for senior lawyers (it's 8 out of 10, shhh...) I'm eager to see how lawyers will respond. Alberta is Calling... ?
From the inbox: after months of job action by Alberta legal aid lawyers groups, the Alberta government says it is increasing tariffs & financial eligibility guidelines “until more permanent changes can be determined.” @meksmith is doing the actual reporting on this so follow her.

“The thing David Milgaard wants you to know is that it could have been you. That it could be you…23 years in prison for a murder he didn’t commit, then 27 more dealing with the consequences – but that it could just as easily be your story.”
I will never forget, and always be grateful for, the days I spent with David Milgaard writing this profile of him several years ago. His openness and vulnerability, and his desire to help others, was so profound. theglobeandmail.com/amp/canada/art…
