“oh yeah? well here’s a book that refutes your position by a smart person who agrees with me!” Can sometimes be translated as: “i haven’t read this, but because i have a naive trust in the authority figures within my community i’m sure your silly objections are dealt with”

The comments ably make Beth Moore’s point.

I do not believe these are days for mincing words. I’m 63 1/2 years old & I have never seen anything in these United States of America I found more astonishingly seductive & dangerous to the saints of God than Trumpism. This Christian nationalism is not of God. Move back from it.

#Genesis 25:27-34 Isaac gets the birthright I think this is among the worst famous stories in the entire Bible. It gets lumped in with the “Jacob as trickster” motif, but there’s no trickery here. It’s just extortion, and it makes Jacob look like a total jerk.

Talking about oppression, justice, etc doesn't make one a Marxist. It makes one a student of the Bible.

Starting a series of running notes on the #Pentateuch. Not a full commentary, just thoughts, mostly on issues of composition and translation of the #Bible. Hope it's useful/interesting, and hoping for engagement: add'l insights from scholars, questions from anyone. Enjoy!

Thread I spent too much time on: Every day, I get emails and DMs from evangelical kids under 18. I don't answer most of my "fan mail," as it were (most of it isn't from fans :P), but I answer every single one of these. Because every single time, it breaks my heart.

Obligatory joke about altared states of consciousness.

If you regularly speak about experts in a particular field of study with scorn, or have a smug, anti-intellectual attitude towards well established consensus positions in scholarship: You might be a fundamentalist

Here is the sixth article in my ongoing "Jesus Mythicism" series, this time on the problems the reference to Jesus' human ancestry in Rom 1:3 poses for Mythicists and featuring Richard Carrier's hilarious "cosmic sperm bank in outer space" theory. historyforatheists.com/2020/05/jesus-…

I think my favorite piece at the Museum of the Bible is the fragment they have of Paul's letter to Gilgamesh

Hey everybody, look! I got "scare quotes" that suggest I'm neither an apologist nor a Christian, and all because I challenge the practice of slaughtering infants and small children in God's name. Funny, I don't remember that line in the Apostles' Creed.

Just once, I'd love to hear Osteen say "Sometimes life sucks and you just have to sit in the ashes for a while and scrape the boils with a shard of pottery."

If you will put yourself in the right environment with friends that challenge and inspire, with people that push you up, then those seeds will take root and you will begin to blossom.
