Auroral activity over East Anglia this evening. Enormous sunspot to blame. Great to see at this low latitude.

H alpha image (10x180s) of SH2-275, the Rosetta Nebula. A work in progress, with LRGB to be added. C11 Edge HD, ASI1600MM, Losmandy. Near Cambridge UK, 19th January 2024.

NGC 4244 aka Silver Needle galaxy integrating nicely via live view for enthusiastic neighbours and a young aspiring astronomer. Starlink satellites also in on the act. Setting up now for long multi-filter run. C11 Edge HD ZWO 1600MM cam.

M82, ‘cigar’ galaxy coming along nicely from my street-lit back garden near Cambridge, uk. Celestron C11, ZWO ASI 1600MM camera, RGBHa filters. Lots of processing to be done tomorrow.

A great Christmas cruise to northern Norway on @fredoleson ‘s #Bolette . Good warning system onboard when the #Auroraborealis kicks off. This I took by iPhone on deck at 4pm on Boxing Day, docked at Alta.

Great to be @IGNSpain to see and hear @nich0lasBr0wn speak about the importance of the Global Geodetic Reference Frame. #22IWLR

Hello my old precious. First proper light on the new C11 HD. Some guiding problems, but generally looking good.

At last, first light on the new Celestron. Not the best time to image the Moon of course and forget faint galaxies, but very pleased so far.

With any luck it’s going to stay clear for a couple of hours to let me get a reasonable image of this galaxy -NGC981. Fingers crossed

Fantastic falconry experience ⁦@WarwickCastle⁩ on Friday. These amazing creatures were flying low over our heads as the ‘quest’ was related, to exhilarating music. And then of course the jousting was brilliant too.

Really clear sky last night and I got my first images of the Ring nebula in Lyra. Now to figure out how to combine the RGBL images to produce a colour one.

Wonderful to have just got our new @ronniewood print ‘what price tickets’ of the @RollingStones safety fixed to the dining room wall. A great big, dynamic piece that never fails to raise the spirits. Thanks to Castle Fine Art, Cambridge (castlefineart.com) for delivery.

Loving London as Britain’s Most Historic Towns #historictowns with @theAliceRoberts . As a staff member of the Royal Greenwich Observatory from the late 1960s at Herstmonceux until its closure in Cambridge in 1998, I never tire of hearing about the origin of the @royalobserv

Good to see that lone-working satellite laser ranging is able to continue day and night at the @BritGeoSurvey Herstmonceux Geodetic observatory in support of @NERCscience and, among other users, @ITRF_RefFrame . May clear skies continue team!

Honoured to be part of this work, led by @BritGeoSurvey Space Geodesy Facility, Herstmonceux. The results remove subtle systematic errors in the treatment of laser range observations and improve their value in determination of @ITRF_RefFrame
