Lasso/Beard 2024 🇺🇸

This is on the adults at home & school. At home, less screen availability & more book access. At school, full books read aloud & independent reading time & assigned for hw. My 7th grader is nearly two months into school (private Catholic) & hasn't cracked a book in lit class.

At elite colleges like Columbia, many students are showing up unprepared to read full books. It’s not that they don’t want to, @rosehorowitch writes. Middle and high schools have stopped teaching them how: theatlantic.com/magazine/archi…

My girl at the end of K (age 6). This is possible with oral language building, teaching vocabulary, and #SOR 🔥

I serve a nonprofit that teaches kids to read the right way. Donate to @decode_project today. Because literacy is everyone’s project. giveforgoodlouisville.org/story/Decodepr…

Consider a donation to this amazing nonprofit offering structured literacy to Louisville students who need it most. Our students see 18-22 point gains in their reading assessments. The gift of reading is truly life changing. giveforgoodlouisville.org/story/Decodepr…

Thursday, September 12 is Give for Good Louisville. Please consider supporting an @decode_project, a Louisville-based nonprofit dedicated to low- and no-coast structured literacy programming. mtyc.co/hcb6dg #decodeproject #literacyandjusticeforall #readingisfreedom

Watching "Chang's Replacement" with my 7th-grade son. He says the prof is just like his Spanish teacher. She is 40+ years in at his school, ONLY speaks Spanish in class, cold calls & uses a mini white board. FIVE days a week for 45 minutes. He says she is the BEST teacher he has.

I cried a lot today. I have a stellar support system who knows me, holds me accountable, and holds me up when I can’t carry on…

👇🏻if you support anything, let it be this…

My 12-yo participates in youth assembly. I suggested they explore a bill banning exempt work… He immediately questioned if that would discourage corporations coming to our state. How does a mom homeschool this kid?!

At this point, schooling is at odds with your child’s healthy development and long-term contribution as a human. Bless whatever stage of this truth you are in…

Admittedly, I have a hard kid. Turned 7 last week. 1st grade. Private, Catholic school… Per school, she cried at recess. According to her, the aide said, “Cry louder, I can’t hear you.” She told me she cried quieter because she knew the aide “was just being mean.” What to do?

My 1st grader vs my 7th grader on the first day of school.

Humanities professor vs Economics Professor

I’m not wiring a book, but I noticed I lean left. All the time. Stop that!

What was the last thing you googled while writing your book? I'll start: With the right pressure, at what angle does the spinal cord snap? 🙃

Editing, etc. So much editing and proofing.

What has made your writing improve?

A PK-12 fix in three emojis: 💻➡️🗑️

I’ve been willing and able to vote for POTUS since 2000. It’s always been exciting. It’s never been boring. It’s never even been a difficult decision. I’m at a COMPLETE loss in 2024.
