I was v grateful for the opportunity to present work on prisons, welfare nationalism and the figure of the ‘criminal alien’ at @IKRS_no yesterday - thanks to @NikkOstrand and others for organizing.
This narrative is so divorced from reality. The courts have broken, the jails are full, probation is overseeing a soaring rate of recall. Mouthing platitudes won’t achieve anything. The Tories are all mouth no trousers on justice.
Prisons don’t work. The evidence is all there. Rather than expanding the criminal justice system invest in communities and decimated social, health and community support - education, housing, jobs, youth clubs, refuges, mental health, addictions.
My Labour government will fix the prisons crisis and put dangerous criminals behind bars.
