This is a positive step. The WJB will need the legislative and funding mechanisms to work with local areas to drive whole systems approaches for women in the justice system. Good work is happening locally already! @KateGreenSU @WIP_live @RevDoors @JamesTCobbler @CJInnovation

JUST ANNOUNCED: This Government will launch a new body: the Women's Justice Board. Its goal will be to reduce the number of women going to prison, with the ultimate ambition of having fewer women’s prisons. @UKLabour #Lab24

🧵Today we launched our newest report, Time for change. The report underscores the urgent need for systemic changes within the criminal justice system through stronger partnerships between the government and civil society. Read the full report here: criminaljusticealliance.org/blog/criminal-…

1/1 Without immediate additional funding, #womenscentres #womensservices will not be able to meet the increased demand for their services so women will be left without support, reoffending + recalls will increase & well meaning reforms will be doomed to fail #sustainablefunding

Thought-provoking plan to reform the criminal justice system from @CJInnovation, take a look below...

Our new paper sets out a ten-point plan to reform our increasingly fragile criminal justice system. It calls on the Government to, first, protect the system from overloading & then fundamentally shift how it operates & put it on a path to recovery. ow.ly/UBq650SjKrL

New #JUSTICE episode explores suspended sentences & challenges assumptions on presumptions against short sentences. Do they result in fewer people in prison? @CyrusTata1, @ShonaMinson & @EdwinaGrosvenor explore this, & what impact it will have on women 👉 buff.ly/45kqAKB

I was v grateful for the opportunity to present work on prisons, welfare nationalism and the figure of the ‘criminal alien’ at @IKRS_no yesterday - thanks to @NikkOstrand and others for organizing.

This narrative is so divorced from reality. The courts have broken, the jails are full, probation is overseeing a soaring rate of recall. Mouthing platitudes won’t achieve anything. The Tories are all mouth no trousers on justice.

If you're a criminal, the law should show you no mercy.

Dr Gemma Birkett Reposted

Prisons don’t work. The evidence is all there. Rather than expanding the criminal justice system invest in communities and decimated social, health and community support - education, housing, jobs, youth clubs, refuges, mental health, addictions.

My Labour government will fix the prisons crisis and put dangerous criminals behind bars.
