"This concerned the Free Speech Union, which said when there was fear, self-censorship would follow.” Universities rely on voices being free. How do academics progress knowledge in an environment that doesn't welcome debate and dissenting ideas?

HEFOSA provided accessible mechanisms to enforce the free speech duties of universities (duties they are already subject to under S.43 of the Education Act, which sadly lacks a meaningful route of redress). I hope more Labour MPs will join Stringer in supporting this vital Act.

Labour MP Graham Stringer is opposed to rescinding the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Act. thesun.co.uk/news/30431522/…

Not least because the digital platform is called pol.is. The talk of 'hate speech' is a worry, though. Free speech is one of the central democratic values.

Taiwanese digital democracy seems very interesting: info.vtaiwan.tw

Good speech. It is no exaggeration to say that the future of academic freedom is contingent on the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Act. Academics should not be harassed or hounded out for their beliefs; and students should be able to express their views without fear.

My fourth speech of the day, so a bit croaky, tired and disjointed, but I used a debate on university funding to criticise Labour's disgraceful dumping of the Higher Education (Free Speech) Act. The suggestion that universities should prioritise financial security over academic…

One question we would ask about this piece is: Does the writer really believe that Kauri and Tohorā are closely related, and that Tiwaiwaka is trying to send us messages? thespinoff.co.nz/atea/03-12-202…

It was good to talk to biologist @NickJMatzke on the @nzinitiative podcast about the University of Auckland's controversial curriculum refresh. We also talked about a recent project that suggested that whale song can cure kauri dieback. nzinitiative.org.nz/reports-and-me…

Game theory and choice theory are hugely important and impactful in our modern era... but so too did they play an essential role in the ancient world. Check out our newest Classical Wisdom Speaks #Podcast w/ Josiah Ober of @Stanford & @HooverInst: youtu.be/Ms9-6s4GyWw

1. Ancient Greek verbs which for whatever reason take μή with an infinitive can end up with the double negative μὴ οὐ.

I agree. Here is a version of a map of the earliest farming cultures that I used in my first year courses on ancient civilizations

People should learn the basics of where civilization originated

That's true, but that doesn't mean that if someone asked where the iPhone came from, the best answer would be 'the ancient Near East'
