On 29 September 1941, a massacre was carried out by German forces during their campaign against the Soviet Union. Approximately 33,771 Jews were killed, including these girls: Mania Halef and Larisa “Larochka” Ratmanski.

Auschwitz camp was originally created in spring 1940 mainly as a tool of terror in German-occupied Poland. Its first prisoners were members of Polish leadership, resistance & intellectuals - people arrested for their real or potential "threat" for the Reich.

27 May 1944 | Two Jewish prisoners escaped from the #Auschwitz II-Birkenau camp: Czesław Mordowicz from Poland and Arnošt Rosin from Slovakia. Their account about extermination of Hungarian Jews was later sent to Switzerland, and then presented to the governments of the Allies.

25 March 1936 | Rene Tyk, a French Jewish boy was born in #Paris. On 19 August 1942 he was deported from #Drancy to #Auschwitz in a transport of 1,000 people. He was murdered at Auschwitz right after arrival on 21 August 1942. He was 6 years old.

March 24, 1943 | Approximately 2,800 Jewish men, women and children from the ghetto in Salonika arrive from occupied Greece to #Auschwitz. Following the selection, at least 1,986 of them are killed in the gas chambers.

But we are also incredibly grateful to him, Barbara, and their family for opening their doors and trusting us. We spent an entire year working together and making plans, which allowed us to become friends. Hearing his stories brought pain and healing at the same time.
