I’ve spent the last 1.5 years researching the climate benefits of “clean” #hydrogen. Here are 10 things I’ve learned: 1/ Conventional wisdom is WRONG. Hydrogen (H2) made from renewables and water is not inherently climate neutral and can still contribute to climate change.

If we keep emitting CO₂ on current trends (0.5%/yr), then the remaining carbon budget for 1.5°C is gone in a little over 10 years. The clock is updated every year & this year's update using @gcarbonproject shaved nine months off the clock. theconversation.com/climate-clock-…

"What's unfolding right now in China's car market is far closer to some of the heady forecasts, that at the time... just seemed dreamy and wishful."

Let's play the superlative game: the biggest story in global climate is unfolding in real time right now in China's EV market which is absolutely off the hook. EV (NEV) sales are headed towards 3 million this year, as ICE sales get absolutely crushed. 1/

The macroeconomics of stringent mitigation scenarios are highly uncertain. From a general equilibrium perspective, the move away from fossil fuels is likely to be a significant negative supply shock unless green investment can boost potential output. bit.ly/3uau8N2

Which is exactly why electricity will not be priced at marginal cost - even if innovation brings down the cost of renewables even further. Electricity is more likely to be priced at average cost (covering R&D and fixed costs) to provide the incentive for private sector provision.

The sour look when your future potential coalition partner tells you that fighting climate change is mostly about higher private investment rather than public spending.

Very nice graphic confirming that climate change has already made the UK both wetter and warmer.

We use 30 year averages to show climatology (average weather conditions). During the 20th century the UK climatology followed a path round a confined box. With #globalwarming and #climatechange they have escaped out the box. This #dataviz shows UK rainfall and temperature.

"This report gives us a much clearer view of our climate future. It does this by narrowing the range of climate sensitivity – which had remained largely unchanged since 1979"

The new IPCC 6th Assessment Report (AR6) provides an unprecedented degree of clarity about the future of our planet, and the need to reduce – and ultimately eliminate – our emissions of greenhouse gases. In this thread I take a look at some key findings from the report: 1/27

We are failing to stop further global warming.

If you only read one thing on the new green plan - read this: thoroughly detailed assessment of the UK's new 10 point Green Deal. What's so startling is the gap between the stated ambition and reality. HMT clearly not yet prepared to take the damages from climate change seriously

++NEW++ Boris Johnson 10point UK plan for "green industrial revolution" is out by 2030 🚗petrol/diesel ban 🌬️40GW offshore 🔋"aim" for 5GW hydrogen 🏭4 CCS clusters ++ ⚛️£ for big/small nuclear 🏠heat pump target, retrofit £ ++more Is it a lot? ✅ Enough for net-zero? ❌ 1/

A warmer atmosphere holds more water. A warmer climate brings more intense storms. Most of our infrastructure was built for the climate of the 20th century. Most of that infrastructure is still around and will be still around for many more decades. We aren’t built for this, yet.
