Some very exciting news... after many, many, winter beards, I'm overjoyed to be joining sunny @UCSDPsychology as an Asst Prof in Jan 2025! Looking to recruit folks interested in doing some fun science, while building some cool (and useful) toys! Details: eshinjolly.com/lab/

It's both Diwali and Halloween today and this is my semi regular PSA that y'all should eat more sweets

Interested in working with me and/or any of my awesome colleagues at @UCSDPsychology for grad-school? Come check out this virtual event that @asmithflores organized for next week! Registration deadline this Friday (Oct 11)! diversifyingpsychology.ucsd.edu

Now out in @NatureComms (lead: @Xu_Xinming)! How do conversations shape how (and what) people guess about the unknown past and future (e.g., in other people's lives)? Paper/code/data: nature.com/articles/s4146…

Proud to have the entire @FINNLab_neuro at #CCN2024! Here's where you can catch us: First up, Katie O'Nell @katieoneuro has a talk in tomorrow morning's session (Thurs 9:30am) about a new way to quantify what makes conversation good (hint: think pink 🩷🎀💅)

Happy to see this work led by @zaidzada_ now published in @NeuroCellPress! We use LLM embeddings to capture word-by-word linguistic content transmitted from the speaker's brain to the listener's brain in real-time, face-to-face conversations: cell.com/neuron/fulltex…

New paper! With the happily twitterless Janice Chen, we examine how narrative structure is critical to the effectiveness of naturalistic stimuli and propose that the value of narratives can be understood for their use in improving credit assignment and efficient planning.

Angie Wang's illustrated essay for the New Yorker, wondering whether her child's early attempts at speech were the same as LLMs, was a finalist for the 2024 Pulitzer Prize. Read On The New Yorker's Website: newyorker.com/humor/sketchbo…

What determines the content of replay? A key challenge for current theories is that on tasks that feature unbalanced experience, rats paradoxically replay the less-experienced trajectory (e.g. Carey et al. 2019, Gillespie et al. 2021). Check out our new preprint on the topic!

We talk to share how we see the world. Here, we show that natural consensus-building conversation leads to future neural synchrony. Deeply satisfying to see this in print. With @c_welk , @HassonLab , @akleinb , and @ThaliaWheatley link.springer.com/article/10.103…

The time between students initiating the encampment action and being arrested by New Hampshire State Troopers in riot gear was about 2 hours. Think about how primed and committed Dartmouth's admin were. They justify this in the name of protecting 'academic debate' and 'safety'.

Tonight a small, peaceful, very inclusive group of Dartmouth students set up a modest camp on our Green. Dartmouth knew they were coming and responded state state riot police backed up by a state SWAT team. What are other instances of colleges IMMEDIATELY responding full force?

At 12:30 p.m., Dartmouth faculty and staff staged a walkout on the Green in response to the arrest of 90 individuals last night. They are also circulating a petition calling for an emergency meeting of the General Faculty of the College. ow.ly/yP6p50Rvezg

It cannot be stressed enough that this was the Dartmouth admin's *first* course of action. President Sian Leah Beilock et al. were so eager to deploy thugs with batts on their own —completely peaceful— students and faculty that they couldn't even wait for the sun to fully set

Those cops were brutal to me. I promise I did absolutely nothing wrong. I was standing with a line of women faculty in the their 60s to 80s trying to protect our students. I have now been banned from the campus where I have taught for 34 years.
