Tweet #1 Like most Twitter users, I have many opinions. But I’m intending to limit this account (mostly) to my professional expertise – health care for older Americans, particularly at-home care, nursing facilities, and assisted living. Looking forward to new connections.

Looking forward to speaking on LTC policy and culture on Tuesday July 16. Why are false statements from 1991 still common today? What explains the odd dynamic in LTC policy discussions? I'm exploring some new ideas and covering both public policy and resident-specific advocacy.

Eric Carlson (@justiceinaging) will discuss advocacy strategies for LTC residents. The discussion centers on the day-to-day advocacy that is essential to a resident receiving good care, w/ consideration also of how LTC culture can impede both individual & systemic reform efforts.

It was my pleasure to speak in Portland yesterday at the statewide training for the Oregon LTC Ombudsman program. Great discussions on advocacy strategies for HCBS-funded facilities. Thanks to Fred Steele, Ashley Cottingham, and their dedicated colleagues.

We’re thrilled that the settlement agreement for our federal class action, Marsters v. Healey, will enable 2,4000 people in Massachusetts to transition out of nursing facilities and back to their home communities. @BostonLegalAid @public_rep @FoleyHoag wgbh.org/news/local/202…

justiceinaging.org/federal-qualit… New reports from Justice in Aging. CMS-approved assisted living "quality measures" actually have little to do with assisted living or quality. E.g., zero divided by zero reported as "perfect" 100% performance.

Points out the need for the @janschakowsky legislation, Stop Unfair Medicaid Recoveries Act, introduced in 2022, and likely to be reintroduced later this session.

Fran Ruhl’s family received a startling letter from @IowaHHS weeks after she died. The letter said Iowa’s Medicaid program had spent $226,611.35 for Ruhl’s care, and the gov't wanted to recoup that money. It seemed bogus, but it was real. 📝: @tonyleys khn.org/news/article/m…

We need stronger enforcement of the laws that are meant to protect residents' rights and property. But also, residents and family need to watch out for themselves. @justiceinaging's 25 Common Nursing Home Problems Guide can help. bit.ly/3AEn7ae

Proud to be part of the Justice in Aging team that’s co-counsel on this important case.

Nursing homes are a last stop for many people with disabilities who can’t find accessible affordable housing. A new lawsuit claims the state is letting thousands people 'languish' in nursing homes who could live on their own. My latest for @GBHNews: wgbh.org/news/local-new…
