Been tinkering a lot lately with #cameratrap photos from our research in @ThaideneNene IPA to make simple, stylized drawings of the species we’re observing. Maybe some of these will make it into a figure one day, maybe not #ScienceTwitter #AcademicTwitter @LaurierBiology #WILDlab

If ceremonial hunting in a National Park makes you uncomfortable... Highways, golf courses, and neighborhoods within a National Park should give you outrage! These human features and hobbies displace & kill wayyyy more wildlife than hunting.

Ceremonial Indigenous bison hunt will happen in Banff National Park next month thealbertan.com/beyond-local/c…

Rushed ballot box science leading to negative outcomes for the species. Coexistence is controversial and attitudes take time to adjust. Sets a bad precedent and doesn’t look good for the future outlook of the species in the state.

To cluster wildlife cameras or not? Recent research suggests Yes! Check out: @___LauraStewart’s thesis with @wildco_lab in the N.W.T: open.library.ubc.ca/soa/cIRcle/col… And this recent study (Palencia et al., 2024) in BES: besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11…

NEW PAPER: We followed the fate of 40 caribou herds —the southern mountain caribou population—to assess their trajectory and response to recovery actions. What we found was surprising and bitter sweet: dramatic declines but recent recovery due to controversial measures. 🧵 (1/n)

Still adjusting back to the desk job after almost a month flying Caribou surveys in Ontario’s far north. Felt immeasurably good to get outside again but the very unseasonably low snow depths definitely has me hoping for a wet spring.

One of the best field jobs I’ve ever had, so cool to see the years of hard work making it out to the public

Excited to see our latest study on elk responses to humans, cougars, and wolves in northeast Washington featured in the @SpokesmanReview, penned by @mj_wright1 🦌 #WAPredatorPreyProject spokesman.com/stories/2024/f…

A hungry looking wolverine (nághaye) chases down a speedy snowshoe hare (gah) along a frozen Great Slave Lake (Tu Nedhé) in @ThaideneNene While #cameratrap data can't be used to directly infer species interactions, every now and then they'll give you a peak at a northern drama.

Beautiful mature muskox (yutthéjëré) cow for #TrailCamTuesday. Every now and then, after sifting through thousands of images of blurry animal butts, you get a camera trap image that makes you question why you bring a handheld camera into the field at all. @ThaideneNene

Big ol Caribou bull (bedzicho(gh)) running off a mother (ts’úday) and calf (bedziaze) just minding their own business in @ThaideneNene #NorthwestTerritories #CameraTrapTuesday

A couple playful caribou calves (bedziaze) having a romp on a beautiful sunny tundra day to brighten things up while the snows blow and the mercury drops here at the office #CameraTrapTuesday @ThaideneNene

Been quiet on here as I’ve tried to disconnect during the fall hunting season. This young buck was taken on my grandparents farm, a place I didnt fully appreciate until I began hunting. Now I know and love every inch of this landscape. The freezer is full again and I’m content.

A great video on the collaborative ice road research Laurier is conducting with the folks from Łutsël Kʼé, an essential link between the people and the landscapes which they rely on.

Ice roads are essential for northern transportation. As Arctic temperatures rise, Laurier’s Homa Kheyrollah Pour is collaborating with Indigenous communities to ensure safe winter travel. Learn more about her #InspiredResearch: wlu.ca/features/north… #NWT #AcademicTwitter
