.@Dr_MannyO’s last name, Ohuabunwa, means "a child is not a slave." He asks colleagues to try to pronounce it correctly—and avoid other name-based microaggressions to honor people from ethnically distinct backgrounds. And offers simple tips for doing so. ow.ly/bVuB50U2J88

Why do they intentionally mispronounce Kamala's name?

Emmanuel Ohuabunwa MD/MBA Reposted

What’s in a name? A 🧵 My name is Camara Williams. I say that as a proud Black man who was born in this country, but given a name to reflect my ancestry My parents gifted this name to me for representation & to remind of worth The name origin is West African & it means teacher

Michael Eric Dyson and I had to correct Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) at least 10 times last night for purposely mispronouncing Kamala Harris’s name. “I will say Kamala’s name any way that I want to,” Mace said. This is what the Republican Party has become. 🤦🏾‍♂️

Emmanuel Ohuabunwa MD/MBA Reposted

Yeah. Stop mispronouncing her name. It's disrespectful

What’s in a name you ask? Well, a lot. We discuss how names are misappropriated to judge “#decolonization” in #research/ #science. D/N suffice. Multiple studies on blinding names taught us that already @AcademicChatter #AcademicChatter #AcademicTwitter #medtwitter @Dr_MannyO 5/

Beautifully written. Kim is easy to pronounce but there’s a reason I kept my full first name professionally as well. It is part of my identity. As @UzoAduba succinctly said: “If they can learn to say Tchaikovsky and Michelangelo and Dostoyevsky, they can learn to say Uzoamaka.”

As someone who dreads correcting others about my last name’s pronunciation, this article was really helpful. Especially when thinking about graduating medical school and going by Dr. Viaud-Murat 🤗
