Excellent presentation by @dkale001 outlines some of the challenges recruiting people from mental health services for smoking cessation trials. But some evidence offering e-cigarettes to this population can contribute to harm reduction, eg smoking reduction #SSAConf2024
.@AnnikaTheod presenting her (massive!) analysis of associations between different markers of socioeconomic position and smoking outcomes. More work to be done exploring differences in motivation to stop smoking. #SSAConf2024
Excellent society lecture by @AnnDMcNeill outlines some of the key controversies in tobacco harm reduction. Misperceptions, moral judgments, and inconsistencies in the way nicotine is viewed compared with other widely accepted but more harmful substances. #SSAConf2024
The ever excellent @TattanBirch on secondhand nicotine absorption from e-cigarettes vs smoking in children This may seem simple but important evidence - secondhand exposure far lower from e-cig vapour than smoking @SSA_Addiction @UCL_TARG
Great talk from @MelissaOldham on trends in alcohol-related deaths. No good news here - there have been sharp and sustained rises since the pandemic. Largely driven by alcohol-related liver disease. #SSAConf2024
Impact prize winner @Sharon_ACox presenting a sobering overview of smoking among people experiencing homelessness. Key message - there is hope, but we need to take support to this population and engage homeless services. #SSAConf2024
I think all the media attention highlights just how many people were unaware varenicline ever existed. Good news to have it back as another effective option in the toolkit of stop smoking support, but it’s not the miracle cure some outlets have made it appear.
I don’t why the media are reporting that the NHS is to start offering a “new” or “game changer” stop smoking pill. Varenicline was first available in the UK in 2006. I have prescribed it many times previously. All that has happened is that is has been re-introduced in the UK.
Thank you. It really is great news!
🎉🎉 Wow, that's awesome news! And 🤣 definitely nothing to do with me. @DrSarahEJackson and colleagues who authored the paper should be very proud
NHS England announce launch of generic varenicline 3 years after Pfizer’s Champix recall 🥳 Excellent news! Large clinical trials consistently find it to be one of the most effective smoking cessation treatments. Our cited research is available here: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/ad…
Following the popularity of this session at CTSI Conference 2024, we are hosting an online session on vape regulations to give those unable to attend the opportunity to hear from CTSI Lead Officers. Visit our website to find out more and sign up: ow.ly/rIrT50Tkc2s
We are looking for users of different tobacco products to speak to us about a research project we are working on in collaboration with Cancer Research UK. If you might be interested, please get in touch!
Excellent blog on how to give a great presentation... and a timely reminder to practice mine for #SSAConf2024
I've (foolishly) posted a blog on giving presentations just 3 days before I'm due to give a presentation. Now to decide what will illustrate these points best, an exemplar or a cautionary tale...#SSAConf2024 addiction-ssa.org/career-resourc…
Clearly written article underscores the need to get the balance right when it comes to regulating vaping. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
