In 1949, Albert Einstein wrote WHY SOCIALISM. Here is an extract.

me, owner of a new computer, doing anything on said computer: "wow it's so good at computing this"

I don't see people mentioning this but the most exciting thing about the new Mac mini with Thunderbolt 5 is the possibility to run 64Gbps PCIe 4.0 x4 passthrough for Linux eGPU in the future.Thunderbolt 4 chips max out at 32Gbps (3.0) or 40Gbps (4.0) so it's 46-66% more bandwidth

marketing vs reality

Assuming browser.geekbench.com/v6/cpu/8588187 is accurate, M4 Pro 10P/4E is: - 6% better than M2 Ultra with 16P/8E - 2% better than AMD 9950X with 16C/32T @ 170W stock - 1% worse than Intel 285K with 8P/16E @ 250W stock - 44% better than Snapdragon X Elite with 12C @ 23W

Mac mini is great and all but here's a Zen 4 NUC thats smaller (3in^2), gets similar performance as base M3, and has 32GB RAM currently on sale for $500.

As the author of this PDF, it's been interesting seeing people guess at the rationale behind its design. However, the rationale had nothing to do with theory vs practice, and everything to do with pragmatically coping with an unaccommodated disability in academia. (1/16)

Compilers was was known to be the hardest CS class at Cornell which was hard as it is. We were handed a 8-page PDF at the start of sem for a language spec we'd be implementing by the end of sem, split into 6 parts. On part 5, the median was a 0/100 and most the class failed.

Every time I write a windows driver I ask myself what sequence of mistakes I had made to lead to this moment

Every once in a while I accidentally use Bing and remember how bad it is. Really captures the Microsoft product design ethos: every square inch not covered by "content" is wasted space. You're not getting me to stay longer on your page by overwhelming me with useless info.

Expressing my gratitude to @DavidEGrayson for writing davidegrayson.com/signing/ the only comprehensive documentation I found on windows driver signing not riddled with mistakes or outdated information (including Microsoft's own articles)

it's crazy how official microsoft guidance is "turn off hardware security features to get a few more frames" support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/…

I just tried sideloading latest YouTube IPA (with uYouEnhanced) on visionOS 2.0 and it works perfectly (as an iPad app). Unlike last time I tried it, you can login and click on stuff.

So, Google is killing its cache (which was amazingly useful), and replacing it with a third-party solution of linking to the Internet Archive. I really hope the Internet Archive is being paid -- and paid a lot -- for this.

We know many people, including those in the research community, value seeing previous versions of webpages when available. That’s why beginning today, we're adding links to the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine to our "About this result" panel, to give people quick context and…
