#OTD in 1942, USS New Orleans was hit by a torpedo and lost her entire bow during the Battle of Tassafaronga. The crew made quick repairs with coconut logs and then sailed the cruiser in reverse for 1,800 miles to reach Sydney, Australia.

Something often missed, given the historical focus on WWII, is that Japan had a very sizeable mandate in the northern Pacific in the 1920s and 30s, as a result of being a victor on the Allies side in WWI. This incorporated most of the Marianas, Marshall Islands and Micronesia.

June 27th 1982: MV Astronomer arrives in the Falklands. She has been converted into a helicopter carrier and now brings 13 helicopters including Chinook and Wessex, plus spares and stores, to the islands. A fast ship, she has made the journey from the UK in just 20 days.
A marvellous sight in Cairns, little and seven times larger! For the first time, HMS TAMAR and HMAS LEEUWIN rafted up with USS EMORY S LAND. Both ships successfully utilised the US Navy submarine tender as a floating jetty and plugged in to her fuel, water and power supply.🇦🇺🇬🇧🇺🇸
