As I grow older, I truly appreciate this 🌸
I grew up thinking that the ultimate goal was to make everything about me appear ‘effortless’ - effortlessly smart, sharp, well-spoken, pretty, everything. This was probably compounded by the barrage of ‘oh my kid doesn’t even go to tuitions yet tops X subject’ type of
"they live in a chawl but have a fridge. Their kids go to school." -- the upper-caste urge to dismiss the struggles of the marginalised if they even dare to live a life that's barely above hand-to-mouth existence. The belief that basic subsistence is all they deserve.
Sit back and think. We wake up to rape threats, Muslim houses being bulldozed, false cases, vandalised mosques, friends turning bhakts, criminals being honoured by the state, children labelled terrorists, friends denied bails, silence,hopelessness. How do we function 'normally'?
Every time my timeline refreshes, the world is a shittier place.
