It's an exercise. It's not the real thing. The real thing, the real use of rhetoric, is when you ask for a raise or push for change or run for office or do any other high stakes persuading. The essay is supposed to be training you for that. But then it became its own game.
Dear students, the task you are supposed to be learning with your essays was never "writing" as in the literal act of stringing words into sentences. You were always supposed to be learning rhetoric, the art of EFFECTIVE writing. Why? 👇
ime, students [obligatory some not all disclaimer] don’t see it that way, at least not at first. To them, it is an opportunity to offload something (writing) which they never felt like they needed to learn in the first place & now no longer have to. But I teach writing
Feedback channels are one of the core practices of every successful system – biological or economic or human. If you are demanding reports, are they being consumed in a way that merits feedback? That's not a negative. That means the essential layer is functioning. Few have it.
Important: Something that's impressed me in my role are managers & executives who ask probing questions about reports, even daily ones. It's not a bother, it's showing staff are creating a product worthy of effort that's actually ~being consumed~. A core incentive to excellence.
