As part of Advocacy Awareness Week, we are delighted to launch our series of BSL videos on Advocacy in partnership with Rethink Advocacy. In the series, we cover: what ‘advocacy’ means, different types of advocacy and how deaf people can access advocacy services.

Deaf4Deaf was created in response to the harm inflicted on minoritised communities by therapists who lack understanding of Deaf culture. We need better regulation and training specifically for Deaf therapists to ensure safe, culturally competent care.

One of the reasons I trained to become a psychotherapist is the astonishing amount of harm I saw being done to minoritised communities from white therapists - most of these were trained though. The whole system needs better regulation. theguardian.com/society/2024/o…

We analysed data from conversations between 249 deaf signers in the British Sign Language Corpus: we found that BSL conversations were only about 3% fingerspelling, so 3% of conversational language is not going to get you very far. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

If you aren’t fluent or proficient in sign language, don’t say you “know sign language” when all you know is the ABCs.

To be fluent in sign language is to have the ability to engage in a 30 mins to an hour conversation with a deaf person who is a member of the deaf community
