Had a great few days visiting @UOW and working with @xiaotianzheng42 on advancing the next stage of our @saef_arc collaboration.
A refresh to data from @observado has pushed the #GBIF index past #3billion records! With <100 million records, this 🇳🇱-based NGO is also a formal #GBIF Participant, whose massive #CitizenScience contribution often goes overlooked—hartelijk gefeliciteerd! gbif.org
Hey #Naarm / #Melbourne polar ECRs! We will be hosting an in-person (😲) catch-up on the evening of Tuesday 8 October, in collab with @saef_arc . Details coming soon. Who's in?
Day 2 at #BNPNetworking in Singapore: Australia well represented! Talk by Xiaotian Zheng from @uowniasra "Model-based inference for spatial biological-dissimilarity indices"
In this #recentlypublished article, Nance, Clarke, & Cook share their international perspective on the use of #community engagement by #conservation practitioners to support the management of inhabited islands.🏝️ Read more at doi.org/10.1111/csp2.1…
Historical photos from the 1960s have extended the record of what glaciers looked like decades before the Larsen-B ice shelf collapsed. @ryan__north @4Dlandscapes 🧵⬇️ youtu.be/O_adRUQJjJc?fe…
⚡️The Larsen-B ice shelf collapsed over a week in 2002 The ice shelf was 3250 square km = Greater Sydney and Wollongong. 🌊After it collapsed, it released colossal amounts of ice from land into the ocean, contributing to rising sea levels. 📷 @NASA
PSA: All #rstats package on #cran will get an official DOI! This will facilitate bibliometrics and giving credit to R package authors. Registering all 20,000+ packages will still take a few more days. But the first couple of thousand are already live. Example:
Great news - Registrations and Abstract submissions are now OPEN! leishman.eventsair.com/aarc
🧨 Shapefile must… be replaced (at least in the spData package).🧨 Recently, we replaced the example datasets in the Shapefile format with the GeoPackage format in the spData package. Learn more about it at buff.ly/3Vpqkql. #rstats #rspatial #geocompx
If you work on Antarctic or Southern Ocean ecology, consider submitting to the @EcolSocAus symposium: From #Antarctica and #SouthernOcean to Australia: Current Ecological Research and Conservation Challenges @amywpliu @DavidClarkeEco 🐧 esa2024.org.au/symposia/
The Call for Abstracts for ESA 2024 is now open! ESA 2024 is shaping up to be HUGE with over 40 Symposia to choose from. Abstract submissions are open for any of these symposia and the Open Forum. esa2024.org.au Submissions close Friday 12 July. 📷️: Kristian Bell
We propose that caves are the first known ecosystems where atmospheric trace gases sustain microbial growth rather than survival and define this process as "aerotrophy". For more check out our preprint. Thx to @saef_arc @greeninglab @MBiogeochem and many more. Comments welcome.
