Do u ever experience the sensation of being an autocomplete machine when you meditate on your speech as you're talking to someone

A computational psycholinguistics workshop is in planning (organized by @bruno_nicenboim, Jakub Dotlacil (Utrecht), and @LenaAJaeger (Zurich). If you are interested in participating, please fill out this very short questionnaire: docs.google.com/forms/d/1oyxfK…

Is this saying that other EV trucks are selling Cybertrucks but Tesla sold more of them, or that Tesla is selling other EV trucks besides Cybertrucks, but fewer of them? In any case, I think the intended meaning is not licensed here... ?

Our philosophy-informed LLM papers now out in TACL! See the improved paper or thread linked below for more on “bibliotechnism”, the referential ability of ngram models, what it means to say LLMs (or humans) have beliefs, beachgoing bardolaters, and more. direct.mit.edu/tacl/article/d…

Thinking of the recent discussion with @EvelinaLeivada and @kmahowald about explicit vs implicit measures of LLM ability. These responses by Claude are fascinating and very un-humanlike - would we expect this to be reflected in the surprisal values as well?

Teaching stats again next semester - gotta revisit what Faulkner wrote about the noise and the signal

My paper on the competition between good-enough processing and rational inference in subtly ill-formed sentences is now published! 📚 doi.org/10.1080/232737…

Slides for MathPsych are coming along well

Usually not one to post AI app screenshots, but Claude 3.5 has impressed me by spotting the NPI illusion, the comparative illusion, and the missing VP illusion. Still fails spectacularly on the depth charge illusion, though.

🚨📚Excited to share my latest preprint with @tmalsburg on German bracketing paradoxes!📚🚨 We find that strong semantic cues can override grammatical constraints (and how tall is a four-story homeowner). #linguistics #academicchatter #research Read here: osf.io/preprints/psya…

And another updated preprint: I argue that when people read subtly ill-formed sentences, there's a cognitive horse race between saying "hell no", doing Bayesian inference, and just 🤷‍♀️osf.io/preprints/psya…

Updated preprint: After we collected more data, it seems that people mostly respect global grammatical consistency during first-pass reading, but local coherence effects appear in rereading: osf.io/preprints/osf/…

⚙️ New preprint alert! ⚙️ "Mouse tracking for reading (MoTR): A new incremental processing measurement tool" with @CuiDing_CL , @mrinmayasachan and @LenaAJaeger ! 🐁⚙️🐭 psyarxiv.com/4ryvs

New preprint about linguistic illusions: psyarxiv.com/w53k8/ I model superficial, "good enough" processing and rational inference about speech errors as competing processes within individuals, and discuss factors driving individual differences.
