A large stone monument depicting the goddess Ishtar has been unearthed in the ancient Assyrian city of Nimrud arkeonews.net/a-large-stone-… #Archaeology #archaeohistories #goddsess
The spring season of the Nimrud Archaeological Project wrapped up last month. We were busy! ⛏ Together with our colleagues at SBAH, we prioritized cleaning and documenting a western area of the Ishtar Temple that had been targeted by ISIS with an earth mover.
This week, the #FBI returned an artifact to the government of Iraq believed to have been stolen during the pillaging of the Iraq Museum in Baghdad 20 years ago. Read more about the recovery and return at: fbi.gov/news/stories/s…
.@TARII_Iraq organized a repatriation event at the @IraqinUSA at which the @FBI returned a 2700 year-old carved Ivory sphinx from Nimrud, & @HSI_HQ returned a 3,300 year-old cuneiform tablet from the reign of Babylonian King Kadashman-Tugru.
Yesterday, @IraqinUSA hosted an art repatriation ceremony in Washington, D.C. Thank you to the @FBI and @HSI for their work to return two artifacts to their rightful owners – the people of Iraq and the Baghdad Museum.
In Mosul, I visited Dier Mar Gorgis. @USEmbBaghdad funded the restoration of the main church and chapel after ISIS attempted to destroy it. Thanks to Father Samer Soreshow Yohanna for the tour of this site that represents how coexistence can overcome hate.
My first time in beautiful #Mosul – Iraq’s second largest city & home of many renowned world-heritage sites. I met w/ #Ninewa Governor al-Jabouri to discuss the progress made to rebuild + what challenges remain. I also spoke w/ local press about my visit & #USIraq360Parternship.

Another day, another stone tool? Is it a weight... is it a plumb bob? Maybe both. Check it out with me! youtu.be/D8EIfWaxs5c
#Mosul We support the rehabilitation of the famous #Tutunji house, and 2 mosques and 2 churches among the oldest and the most beautiful in the old city! Tenacity and dedication! Thank you to #SBAH, the waqf, the churches and @PennCHC @OeuvredOrient @LaGuilde_Action @MediaArchi
Sad news from Cambridge: Dr Joan Oates died on Friday, 3 Feb. Her contributions to Mesopotamian archaeology were enormous (Choga Mami, Nimrud, Tell al-Rimah, and esp. Tell Brak) and she will be very much missed.
Incredible progress in reconstruction of historic Tutunji House in Old Mosul. Team led by Iraqi SBAH Nineveh Dept. (Dir. Khairaldeen A. Nassir). Penn IHSP thanks ALIPH Foundation and US Department of State for funding this effort.
What’s the difference between history and archaeology? According to @profdanhicks, ‘the historian rewrites the past but the archaeologist … intervenes, and in intervening transforms.’ 🦸✨ Read the full letter here: archaeologyuk.org/resource/lette…
