I'm just some dude. A cardboard cowboy. I also write Space-Biff!, the world's first and only board game review site.

For today's installment of Talking About Games, I discuss some of the reasons I might decline to write about a board game, even after I've played it. Shout at me over here, hopefully after reading: spacebiff.com/2024/11/15/tal…

In this chat I talk about subtext in wargames and about art and ambiguity. Some deep concepts that might be of interest to you, and all thanks to Dan and his understanding of games. It was a pleasure and I enjoyed it a lot.

On today’s Space-Cast!, I spoke with Pako Gradaille about Onoda, his game about the WW2 holdout of thirty years. Along the way we discussed how board games can express alienation and discomfort, and both the necessity and perils of ambiguity in art. spacebiff.com/2024/11/13/sbs…

Out of Sorts is a real-time memory game about being abducted by aliens to organize their library. It rivals Wilmot's Warehouse for sheer creativity while still carving out its own celebration of what it means to be human. I love this one. My review: spacebiff.com/2024/11/12/out…

Rivages puts its own unique spin on the smurf-and-write formula with drafted actions and multiple destinations. It's a minor but effective approach. My review: spacebiff.com/2024/11/11/riv…

Not a bad week. You know, for board games.

Imperial Miners is only loosely connected to its Imperial predecessors, instead providing a rapid-fire intro to engine-building with one or two innovative turns. This is one of those rare games that understays its welcome. My review: spacebiff.com/2024/11/05/imp…

Tower Up is a simple game on paper, but one that hides above-the-table complexities of placement and overlapping player interests. My review: spacebiff.com/2024/11/04/tow…

Had a fairly low-key week around here. AMA!

I take board games seriously enough to critique them on grounds of bad historicity, but not seriously enough to send death-threat-adjacent notes. What can I say — life's a tightrope.

One of my favorite things about cross-posting my reviews to BGG is getting to see the bad comments all over again.

Shadow Moon Syndicates riffs on familiar chords, but its premier accomplishment is found in its devious cards and taut hand-building, culminating in a final round with your own crew of thugs and lackeys. My review: spacebiff.com/2024/10/30/sha…

Personal Vendetta is a body-horror card game about defeating your rival clones — but avoiding inflicting too much damage to yourself in the process. It's sticky and intriguing. I wish I liked it more. My review: spacebiff.com/2024/10/29/per…

Vegas Strip is the third-best Peter Hayward game I've played this year, and the wild thing is how that's a compliment. Cheat the house, cheat your friends, laugh the whole time. My preview: spacebiff.com/2024/10/28/veg…
