As with Postman, reading Cain source book only enhances the enjoyment and appreciation.

"While not the first film noir, Double Indemnity is widely regarded as one of the earliest and most influential film noirs, helping define the style with its dark themes, cynical tone, and complex characters, solidifying the characteristics we associate with film noir today."

Accurate if too kind to Gere-Willis.

order of the jackals 1. The Zinnemann adaptation of the Forsyth book...a masterpiece 2. The FF book...v good 3. The Gere/Willis remake of the film...so bad its almost good 4. The Eddie Redmayne TV remake...slow, earnest, po faced & surprisingly dull

Bet on this one. After the mesmerising book, very much odds on.

Well it was all "fucking insane," including writing it in a bordello hotel in Old Macau with $80 left in the pot. collider.com/colin-farrell-…

“I hope the Church of Rome and the Church of England will be blown to smithereens by this.” The resignation of the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, will hopefully mean the disestablishment of the Church of England, says the author and columnist AN Wilson. @HugoRifkind

How soon they forget….

Lord Peter Mandelson now running hard for two big jobs which he believes are complementary: UK ambassador in Washington and chancellor of Oxford. He can play Iago in the court of King Trump and tap into American philanthropy for Oxford’s needs. And he knows his trade stuff from…

Fascinating thread confirming, once again, that in many important respects (energy, housing etc) Texas is vastly better governed than California. To put it another way: Britain needs to be more like Texas than California.

1. There have been warning signs for years that many blue state policies aren't working. Especially because states like California make it really difficult to build anything. Here's a thread with some data... 🧵

Which is rightly much applauded and appreciated. 👏👏👏

Today is the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. That means we are as far removed today from 1989 as in 1989 we were from 1954. Quite the thought for those of us who remember it as if it were yesterday. Fragment of Wall I picked up in Berlin a couple of days later:

Why Tirzah Garwood was so much more than ‘Mrs Eric Ravilious’ thetimes.com/article/2b694e…. A really lovely article. I have booked to see this show ⁦@DulwichGallery⁩ in April.

Wishfully, expected more, perhaps some of the artistry and panache of Fred Zinnemann? @timesculture review today correct that it works best with Redmayne/ the Jackal in our sights. MI5 parents night not so much.

The Day of the Jackal with Eddie Redmayne off to a good start. @NOW

‘ Gets down to what it’s all about, doesn’t it? Making the wrong move at the right time.’

Steve McQueen died 44 years ago today. There are moments in cinema that'll remain iconic forever. One of them is Hilts 'The Cooler King', jumping his motorcycle over a barb wire fence in The Great Escape (1963), made even cooler by having McQueen behind the wheel.

Hank Williams hasn’t answered yet ?

The doorway to heaven..? I might knock and see, but what if no one answers?
