Is DNA in our keepsakes viable for testing? DNA in glass is not viable for testing. It is combined directly into the glass and heated to high temperatures. DNA in our pendants can be viable; however, we recommend getting a Home Banking Vial if you want DNA available for testing.

Question of the week: Why isn’t a paternal haplogroup available on female ancestry samples? The paternal haplogroup relates to the Y chromosome, passed from father to son. As women don’t have a Y chromosome, they will not have a paternal haplogroup.

Why do we partner with Living DNA? Living DNA is able to test postmortem DNA once we specially prepare the samples. Most ancestry companies cannot test postmortem DNA. They offer similar services to other sites, have a high level of privacy, and don't sell data to third parties

Why do we work with funeral homes? Funeral homes are the last place to collect a DNA sample. Cremation destroys DNA and disinterment is costly and difficult to arrange. Allowing families to save their loved ones DNA at a funeral home gives them a final chance to preserve a sample

Does everything in your body contain DNA? DNA is found in most of the approximately 30 trillion cells in your body; however, mature red blood cells, hair, and nails don't contain nuclear DNA. These cells start out with nuclei, but then destroy them in the cornification process.

What types of samples can be tested? DNA Memorial primarily uses cheek swabs for DNA preservation and testing. We can also work with blood, tissue, plucked hair, and specialty items. We have successfully recovered DNA from hairbrushes, toothbrushes, razors, watches, and stamps.

What is DNA? DNA is a molecule that contains genetic information for the development and functioning of an organism. Your body contains billions of cells and every one of them contains the complete set of instructions for making you. These instructions are encoded in your DNA.
