Happy publication day to me and @SallySharp!! More than 4 years of research, our work on mental health and the music industry is out today! 'Can Music Make You Sick?' It is both on Amazon for physical purchase, or FREE download! Yes, free download! uwestminsterpress.co.uk/site/books/m/1…
Was invited on to @BBCNews this evening to talk about the tragic loss of Liam Payne. Liam had been very brave and open about his mental health struggles. Musicians and their mental health is a subject which matters so much to me 🙏🏻❤️
“Something is deeply wrong in the music industry.” Dr George Musgrave’s book ‘Can Music Make You Sick?’ explores the impact of careers in music on mental health. He spoke to @BBCNews following the death of singer Liam Payne.

🚨New publication🚨 Are those tasked with music/creative industries education being real with students & meaningfully preparing them for the emotional & psychological challenges they may face in their careers? I suggest we have a responsibility to do so link.springer.com/chapter/10.100…

I had an odd idea to write a book about the places I grew up (Tuxford, Louth, Surrey & Norwich), family storytelling, and how these connected to rap music & ideas of truth & meaning. Now it's here Out July 23rd Rough Trade: shorturl.at/kDEH0 Amazon: shorturl.at/cFIM4

Very sobering read: careers in music require a huge amount of optimistic self-belief, but the poor odds of success means its similar to gambling where optimism is dangerous. The effect on musicians: "costly persistence and cruel optimism", a massive toll on mental health.
Musicians need self-belief & optimism despite poor labour market outcomes & high risk. But, we ask if being a musician akin to gambling, where optimism is, unusually, a negative trait Bold questions w/ @SallySharp & @micahcline2018 published in Musicae Scientiae @ESCOMsociety 🧵
ok @jamesblake idea: let’s both study this paper. then, come on my podcast (linktr.ee/anatomyofanart…) to discuss @vaultdotfm, the realities of building a sustainable career & the required steps after “artists deserve a living wage” to make that idealism a reality for more*

Pleased to be awarded funding for a project working with @AstronautHeart & amazing colleagues from @UCL_DClinPsy @MarcTibber3 & Emma Silver on musicians’ relationship with social media. Looking for interviewees for this important work. Pls share &/or hit me up if interested 🙏🏻

Calling musicians. Excellent colleagues of mine in @GoldsmithsPsych are doing a study of “musical experiences where you were in a “flow state” or “in the zone” - those peak moments where everything just clicks”. £50/£100 prizes too which is nice Survey: goldpsych.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6x…
