Why are so many modern fiction writers, even some very good ones, using "lay" as the past tense of the transitive verb "lay"? Have they become reflexively afraid of the word "laid"? Or are their editors changing the correct word to the incorrect word?

Teachers in media and communications: Please don't task students with writing or editing Wikipedia content. This is resulting in much inferior content that is unnecessarily undermining Wikipedia's credibility.
