I give it an 80% chance the port strike gets resolved this week. And 15% chance it goes more than a month.

The ILA is not answering questions, only reiterating why they’re going on strike. Brief comment tonight from Bernie ODonnell, international Vice President for the union’s New England area. @NBC10Boston

The ILA has been demanding a 77% pay increase, so if true this seems like a pretty big concession in the first 6 hours of the strike. The employers offered 50% yesterday before the strike started, so we might be close to a deal.

A 30-70% increase in cost of labor would tank most businesses. But ports are a monopolist, so all the cost increases will get passed on to the carriers who pass it on to the merchants who pass it on to you, the consumer.

I just dug into the legal mechanism by which the Biden Administration can intervene to prevent the port strike. No way they can pull this off in time to avert the strike next Tuesday. It’s too late. The strike is happening. The remaining variable is how long will it last. 🧵
