"any proposals for Proportional Representation in Canada should be made-for-Canada ie; retain a strong element of local & regional representation while ensuring that reps are directly elected by the voters & personally accountable to them" fairvote.ca/introprsystems/

Councillor Dianne Saxe introduced a critical motion to look at youth voting rights. It passed by a wide margin. Next, Toronto City Council will vote on implementing this change. Stay tuned for how to get involved! #vote16 @UNICEFCanada @TOYouthCabinet @ttcriders @DailyBreadTO

All of this, but *please* add electoral reform. Outdated First Past the Post makes any progress next to impossible. Ask any lobbyist. #bcpoli

Any NDP-Green deal should include urgent measures to improve the material conditions of those most in need, like: - Tax the rich - Fund public housing - Implement real rent control - Raise the rates All were in Greens’ platform and all are supported by NDP voters. #bcpoli

Left, right, or anywhere in between, proportional representation gives every Canadian a voice in Parliament. It’s time for a voting system that reflects all of us.

Crazy idea but how about we use a proportional system that doesn't grant a party 75% of the seats with just 40%of the vote?

Why did Justin Trudeau abandon his promise for electoral reform? Why did Pierre Poiliviere not pick up the baton and run with it to demonstrate his party will be the ones who will follow through on it? Think about it.

Ireland uses the Single Transferable Vote (with 3-5 member ridings), a candidate-centered proportional representation system. In 2020, 11.9% of their elected TDs were *Independents*. So, anyone who tells you PR systems are only party-centered is wrong!

#ProportionalRepresentation provides stable policy & represents voters well. Why do we keep #FPTP which provides flip flop policy with poor representation of the voters. It’s about power. Power for the mainstream political parties. #cdnpoli #abpoli #onpoli #mbpoli

Ignore the doomsters - we won't regret abandoning First Past the Post. Since switching to PR, New Zealand politics has been just as stable, more representative, and better trusted. @Dylan_Difford was @markpack's guest on 'Never Mind the Barcharts' 👉 buff.ly/3O2h4UE

Proportional representation (PR) systems can prioritize local representation in Canada, ensuring that each region's diversity is better represented in Parliament. Unlike the current first-past-the-post system, PR would allow more voters across regions to elect MPs who reflect…

Proportional representation means Conservatives from Downtown Toronto and Liberals from the Prairies, destroying the "us vs them" mentality in politics. It's time for our democracy to bring our country together, not tear us apart.

If your party promises transformation but doesn't support proportional representation, then it’s not transformational—just status quo dressed up in new slogans.

Oh, and I really don't want to hear "Pro Rep elects nazis" ever again #uspoli #cdnpoli #proportionalrepresentation #Election2024

Every time I see a post in favour of proportional representation, I share it, because I feel strongly that's what we need in Canada. I wish we had America's system, but we don't, but prop rep would be one way to change things for the better.

If they can make the effort to adopt proportional representation for congressional elections thru reforms like the #FairRepresentationAct, these distinct factions can compete directly for votes & win seats in proportion to the support they earn without fighting over a “big tent”.

MSNBC - 11/6/2024 - @chucktodd says the #2024 loss could lead to a fight for the soul of the Democrats between progressives and everyone else

Fun fact: There's a great voting system out there that combines BOTH proportional representation AND ranked ballots! Used successfully in Ireland for a over a century now! Would be a fantastic solution for Canada! Want to know more? See link below: fairvote.ca/stv/

By fighting for proportional representation, organized labor can forge a political system more responsive to the needs of working-class voters and thereby breathe new life into American democracy. jacobin.com/2024/05/fair-r…

The fact the United States uses first-past-the-post voting should be all the reason you need for switching to proportional representation.

Opinion: Time for change: Canada must embrace electoral reform "The introduction of proportional representation is not without its challenges. [But] the benefits of fairer representation and greater voter engagement outweigh these concerns." buff.ly/40wZq2S

In a two-party system, both parties do whatever they want when they're the majority and stonewall everything when they're the minority. There's no incentive to cooperate. With #ProportionalRepresentation, no party can expect to ever have a majority and thus have to compromise.

If we're overhauling our electoral strategy, why not just do it in a beneficial way by axing first past the post? Proportional representation is right there. It solves divisiveness in many other countries
