I am a wuduweard Old English for a woodland warden. Survives in the modern surname Woodward. Replaced by Forester, which itself comes from the French โ€˜Forestierโ€™ that became popular after the Norman invasion

Painting at Bedtime. Meditation. John Collier. Victorian artist Collier was well known for his 'problem pictures', where you had to make up your own mind about what was happening. I don't know if he considered this to be one of them but the lady does seem to me to be sad.

The maple treeโ€™s name โ€œAcerโ€ comes from Latin for โ€œsharpโ€ or โ€œpointedโ€, and may refer to its leaf shape or the fact its wood was used for spear shafts. Maple wood wands are particularly powerful, and its leaves are used in love spells & rituals to attract money. #FolkloreThursday
