On the 30th May 1922 the El Arish State School opened, with 5 students and Principle William Henry Hennessey, and they will be having their centenary in 2 years’ time. Until this opening, the nearest school had been Silkwood and was too far for El Arish children to attend.
The Settlement of soldiers now known as our little town of El Arish, was originally the Maria Creek Soldiers settlement, and then renamed after a town in Palestine called El Arish, where the Australian Light Horse took El Arish from Turkey forces who had occupied the town.
