I’ve talked about this before but despite the misleadingly curated aspects of social media, it’s still given people a much more accurate view of where they sit in the socioeconomic hierarchy than before and that’s damaging to the psyche

While we're busy diagnosing the psyche of America, I think The Apps are very bad because they create intense envy. Every rich kid in America is now showing off their conspicuous consumption 24/7 and we call it Influencing.

we spun up seven trillion ancestor simulations to predict the next president. uncountable souls lived and died in artificial worlds. the result is 50:50

These studies always seem to use “screen time” as a euphemism for “mass social interaction”. Social media begets misinformation, anonymous cruelty, and comparing oneself to others… but so does any large social network. Maybe we’re just not built for an overly connected world?

I'm not sure we need to continue the debate of "Is it the screen time frying kids brains or something else?" It's over folks.

Very cool paper by @Ian_Hohm et al. on seasonal changes in moral values. People endorse the moral foundations of purity, loyalty, authority more strongly in spring and autumn, in part due to increases in anxiety. Yet more evidence that feelings matter. pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn…

Mark Zuckerberg says you can't just separate intelligence from consciousness and upload a mind to the cloud, because there's so much more that makes up a person

if kamala harris wants to win undecided voters, she needs to make empiricallly informed philosophy of mind, with an especial focus on social cognition the center of her message. this is what is important to undecided voters

the integrated information theory of consciousness (IIT) is often said to be incompatible with computational functionalism, and to entail that AI systems (including e.g. brain simulations) running on computers with a von neumann architecture can't be conscious. why? on a first…

incredible sound design work in this entire movie, but the first 30 seconds of this clip specifically. half the thrill is just in *hearing* this thing.
