1) An anecdote from ancient Rome. The philosopher Seneca, formerly Nero's tutor, had a much younger wife, Pompeia Paulina. In one of his letters, he acknowledged the age gap and made the rather creepy suggestion that 'her life depends on mine'.

A good day's work by Hooker although Grant refused to give any credit.

On this day in 1863, 10,000 Federal troops under General Joseph Hooker capture Lookout Mountain near Chattanooga, Tennessee. After the battle, soldiers flock to the summit to pose for the 19th Century equivalent of Instagram shots.
