There's a case to be made for when SA is used in poor taste or like shock value but it can add to the horror sometimes. Take Mouthwashing for example. It's technically used as a twist but that doesn't make it cheap. It reframes the situation and how you view the characters.

I think this is just the result of some newer kids shows being more dialed back and sanitized with their content so anything somewhat dark or disturbing leads to people trying to seperate their series from that label. So that it seems more mature
