Protector to the malaise trap! We are into our second year of setting up a monthly malaise trap for @BIOSCAN_UK . Looking forward to seeing how this year’s results compare to last year’s. @WildOxfordshire #yellowwagtailproject.

Lots of tiny Ichneumonid wasps in the Malaise trap today for @BIOSCAN_UK I've not kept count, but many different sizes, so presumably different species. Out of the few hundred insects, dozens of wasps probably. Is it peak time for wasps like this @BroadGavin

First day of monitoring flying insects in @Peterhouse_Cam gardens for @BIOSCAN_UK I'll be running this once a month for the next 5 years. This will provide useful data on diversity in college and how populations are changing.

Three malaise traps erected for @BIOSCAN_UK - 3 habitats at @KneppWilding - 1 next to scrape, 1 next to old pond (fav of the pigs), & 1 in with the beavers! - @opwall’s very own @miss_lenoir is leading the sampling The British ‘summer’ is going to be a challenge for the insects

From malaise to pot to plate - @miss_lenoir & I have processed the first 3 @BIOSCAN_UK samples from this @opwall field season at @KneppWilding It’s nice knowing that the Sciaridae/Cecidomyiidae are going to be barcoded

17 MILLION insects migrate through a 30m Pyrenean mountain pass every autumn! They fly through the mountains on their remarkable journeys from northern Europe (including the UK) into Spain and beyond for the winter! Our new paper is out right now: royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/epdf/10.10… 🧵

Very exciting that the first live run of the MinION Mk1D device at #nanoporeconf has a huge and biodiverse amplicon pool, as this technology will facilitate much easier global access to high throughput biodiversity discovery and monitoring with DNA barcodes.

I got the @BIOSCAN_UK Malaise trap up between showers without getting wet! Within minutes had a fly going up towards the collecting pot. This mild winter/early spring has meant plenty of invertebrates active. I'm looking forward to contributing some data to this project.

we need @BIOSCAN_UK partners in Scotland, Wales, East of England, and along UK coasts. if you are interested in your local insect diversity for your research and could run a 24hr Malaise trap each month for 2+ years, get in touch and please RT! (1/2) sanger.ac.uk/collaboration/…

Express DNA barcoding published! We combine DNA leaching, NextGenPCR, and MinION to go from specimens to barcodes in hours without breaking the bank. Say hello to fast pest identification, food authentication and species sorting in the field. doi.org/10.1111/1755-0… @nanopore

Related to this -- there is a funding call now open for up to 50K Euros to anyone who is able to provide expertly identified specimens to species level for species found in Europe lacking barcode reference data -- see biodiversitygenomics.eu/2023/11/27/ope… Please RT

on insect diversity in those regions. second, we need people who have exceptional taxonomic knowledge of the bugs of britain -- especially the speciose families in Diptera (chironomids, phorids, cecidomyids, sciarids, psychodids) -- to help us refine the reference index.

@walesbotanic is still the only @BIOSCAN_UK partner in Wales. If you are interested in DNA-based biomonitoring of arthropods at your site then register your interest here sanger.ac.uk/collaboration/…

here is a map showing our partners and where their sites are based. can you help put a pin somewhere that is underrepresented?
