A detailed thread with the latest warnings, satellite imagery, fire data and testimony of an escalation of hostilities in Sudan's northern Darfur.

The situation in the Darfur city El Fasher (الفاشر) is extremely concerning. It's the last city not under control by the dangerous Rapid Support Forces and has been a safe haven for those fleeing attacks by the RSF. It is now a city under siege and in a grave situation. /1

Co-signed - it has been an absolute privilege 🙏

From our last class of the semester @columbiajourn Spending time with these students over the past few months — and especially watching their coverage in recent weeks — has been one of the greatest privileges. There should be a line out the door to work with them.

Just a little clarification on this - I’m talking about students of the Columbia Journalism School. I got in after this only because a Professor escorted us. Access seems to change every minute.

Columbia University is letting in press right now, but not their own student press. We’re being refused access to our own campus for the third day in a row.

The IDF says it is telling civilians to evacuate parts of Rafah ahead of a planned offensive, but our recent investigation into similar past warnings showed safe zones were repeatedly targeted anyway.

An NBC News investigation into seven deadly airstrikes has found Palestinians were killed in areas of southern Gaza that the Israeli military had explicitly designated as safe zones. @HalaGorani reports from Israel.

Israel's shutdown of @AJEnglish on national security grounds sets a dangerous precedent, as I told @nytimes But it's even more alarming in context. Journos in Gaza have been killed, injured, exiled. Foreign media is banned. Who will tell the story? nytimes.com/live/2024/05/0…
