Word of the day is ‘recrudescence’ (17th century): the return of something terrible after a time of reprieve.

At least she's saying that this government (unlike the last one) is willing to listen to charities - but the charity I used to work for has closed because it lost funding and now all charities with employees are hit by the rise in Employer NI. theguardian.com/politics/2024/…

Some thoughts on Israel-Lebanon-Hezbollah-Iran in our latest podcast below - and why things are escalating in this way. In particular • The military success against Hezbollah does not = a political strategy • Other Arab nations + many Lebanese hate Hezbollah • BUT many…

Research has shown that advice charities save local authorities more than they cost. Sadly, by the time the council rue their choice, even if they backtrack (hah), the advice expertise will have been lost elsewhere. So many advisers I know have quit the sector completely.

My charity will be unable to take on new advice enquiries from the public after 1st October. This is devastating news for our staff, volunteers, partners and, most importantly, the people of Coventry.

If people are on such a low income that they are struggling to heat their home, they should also approach their local council and apply to the Household Support Fund. (4)

If you know someone who really will struggle to heat their home to the temperature they need for their health, tell them to worry about the bill later, stay warm, talk to their energy company, and seek advice on debt, benefits and income maximisation. (3)

As someone fast approaching pension age though, the knee jerk reactions from those who talk about thousands of deaths from hypothermia make me wonder if they think everyone over 66 is frail and infirm. (2)

I'm conflicted on the removal of the winter fuel payment from all but those who qualify for pension credit. it was lousy timing forced by the administrative deadline. I wonder if it would have been better if the government could have given more warning. (1)

Average height of a woman in UK today is still only 5'3". Can someone tell the clothing manufacturers?! I know I'm only 5' tall but clothes shops are really taking the piss now.

Resorted to reading Keir Starmer’s interview on BBC website. I gave up watching when @bbclaurak started with illogical questions. I won’t accuse her of bias as, to be fair, I rarely make it more than 5 mins into any interview she conducts with any party.

In the end, life is unfair and there is no perfect solution. Winter fuel allowance currently benefits people over 66 entitled to at least £221 a week, but the state thinks a single unemployed person of 65 can live on £393 a month. (3)

If the winter fuel allowance truly makes a difference, then the fairest way to administer it would be to taper the award of pension credit (PC) so no-one drops off the cut-off cliff, and to encourage pensioners to apply for PC. (2)

The anger over means-testing winter fuel allowance seems to assume that thousands will have to choose between heating/eating. I know some elderly can find it harder to stay warm but the choice is more likely to apply to the unemployed, who live on a third of the state pension. (1)

If you had plans to be away when Sunak took us by surprise with his July 4 election, you should apply for a postal vote now. Deadline is not that far away. Don’t let the Tories voter suppression campaign work - go to this site now GOV.UK gov.uk/apply-postal-v…

So. Farewell then, Nadhim Zahawi, who, just days after the last Eye asked when he might take the hint and resign as MP for Stratford-on-Avon, has done precisely that. Zahawi's resignation letter ran through his greatest hits without mentioning his tax blunders or expenses claims…

The more time I spend doing debt advice and reading regulations, the more I wish I’d studied law where perhaps they teach the skill of understanding impenetrable legalese.
