We're also now in the blue place - in case you want to follow us over there!
It's that time of the year again when all the annual journals turn up! The SMC journal is always a good read - and this year we get a brief mention in @simrich99 article about climbing with Catherine Destivelle
Had a fascinating tour of @mtn_heritage as part of @thealpineclub Blencathra weekend. A wonderful collection that's well worth a visit if you're researching mountaineering history.
Putting away our Edward Compton exhibition in prep for What would Lucy say? - an exhibition about women, the Ladies Alpine Club and the Alpine Club.
If you've liked our @artukdotorg #onlineartexchange posts then you might enjoy this year's club calendar- 12 beautiful mountain paintings showcasing some of the best art in the club's collection (including one of the rarely seen Ruskins)
The 2025 Alpine Club Calendar is available now! As well as gorgeous mountain paintings from the likes of John Ruskin and Edward Whymper, the calendar also includes notable dates from mountaineering history. Buy yours now ➡️ tinyurl.com/bdfpsd77
Today's @artukdotorg #onlineartexchange is spooky art And we have ... nothing. So enjoy this tranquil painting of the Chateau de Chillon - haunted by François Bonivard, a 16thC monk who was imprisoned in the castle and inspired Byron to write a terrifying 392 line poem.
Having to use the big table for today's research requests - a jacket worn by Frank Smythe on #Everest in the 1930s and a tent from Everest 1953
First job after my holiday - flatten the posters for our next exhibition!
This week's @artukdotorg #OnlineArtExchange theme is women artists for @BarberInstitute’s Women in Power: Coins from the Barber Collection. This is The Fee Glacier and Alphubel by Hilda Marion Hechle, a member of the Ladies Alpine Club who climbed in the Alps in the early 1900s
We were thrilled to be able to showcase some items from the @AlpineClubLib collection in the latest bulletin of the Cultural Association for Travel in Switzerland.
Not at all mountain related - but our librarian acquired a tiger. In other news our Compton exhibition is open to visit - alpine-club.org.uk/events/past-fu… for those that prefer mountains :-)
Congratulations to AC members @ZimmermanGraham, @heatherldawe and @TibbettsPhoto whose books have been announced among the category finalists in the 2024 Banff Mountain Book Competition ➡️ tinyurl.com/3nxm8xnh
Today's @artukdotorg's #OnlineArtExchange celebrates painted portraits for The Herbert Smith Freehills Portrait Award at @NPGLondon We've chosen this 1956 portrait of Douglas Busk by B. Busk - which oversees the library that The Times described as 'his greatest work'.
If you saw our Everest 1924 exhibition then this is the perfect compliment to it - and if you didn't then it's a perfect opportunity to learn about one of the lesser known expedition members!
Bentley Beetham took many of the most iconic images of the 1924 #Everest Expedition. Next Tuesday, Stephen Livingstone joins us to discuss Beetham and to recreate the slide show he gave every year following the expedition. Join us then ➡️ tinyurl.com/yy59cxs8
This week's #OnlineArtExchange theme is family and domestic interiors. We've managed one of these- this sketch from Henry Willink's watercolour album of his honeymoon trip through Europe in 1880. Note how Willink and his wife's (MGW) legs lean towards each other! @artukdotorg
Getting things out for our Edward Compton exhibition - starting on the 24th September #alpinepainting
Our journal stack is officially 'getting there' - not in order yet but the rough sorting by country/club name is nearly done!
